So...what new music have you been listening to lately?
I bought two CD's this weekend. The first is the new Me First and the Gimme Gimme's CD. I remember seeing a thread about it, but I hadn't heard it until this weekend. It's awesome! If you're not familiar with MFATGG's, they do punk (kinda) covers of popular songs. This is their third CD, and it's all black artist covers. It includes "Hello"--Lionel Ritchie, "The End of the Road"--Boyz II Men, and "Natural Woman"--Aretha, among many others. It's brilliant.

The other CD I bought was the new Fountains of Wayne. I had seen the video for "Stacy's Mom" and bought it for that one song, but the whole CD is great. They're hard to define--poppy, punky, singer-songwritery, with a little alt-country and folk thrown in there for good measure. Here's the lyrics to "Stacy's Mom", a song about a teenage boy who's dating a girl named Stacy, but is secretly in love with her mom:

Stacy's mom, has got it goin on
Stacy's mom, has got it goin on
Stacy's mom, has got it goin on
Stacy's mom, has got it goin on

Stacy can I come over
After school (after school)
We can hang around
by the pool (hang by the pool)
Did your mom get back
from her business trip (business trip)
Is she there?
Or is she tryin to give me the slip (give me the slip)

You know I'm not the little boy
that I used to be
I'm all grown up
Now baby can't you see!?

Stacy's mom, has got it goin on
She's all I want, and I've waited for so long
Stacy can't ya see? you're just not the girl for me
I know it might be wrong but,
I'm in love with Stacy's mom

Stacy's mom, has got it goin on
Stacy's mom, has got it goin on

Stacy do you remember
when I mowed your lawn (mowed your lawn)
Your mom came out
With just a towel on (towel on)
I could tell she liked me
From the way she stared (way she stared)
And the way she said
'ya missed a spot over there' (spot over there)

And I know that you think its just a fantasy
But since your dad walked out
your mom could use a guy like me

Stacy's mom, has got it goin on
She's all I want and I've waited for so long
Stacy can't ya see?
You're just not the girl for me
I know it may be wrong but,
I'm in love with Stacy's mom

Stacy's mom has got it goin on (shes got it goin on)
She's all I want and I've waited for so long
Stacy can't ya see, You're just not the girl for me
I know it might be wrong, I'm in love with-

Stacy's mom, ah-oh-ah-oh
I'm in love with-
Stacy's mom, ah-oh-ah-oh
Wait a minute
Stacy can't ya see?
You're just not the girl for me
I know it might be wrong but
I'm in love with Stacy's mom

Genius!

So, what are you listening to lately?

Cat :)

3. Warren Zevon's 'My Ride's Here' is on order from A-zon
When it gets here, I'll start listening in earnest.

Lately, I just keep the radio welded to the local classical station- can't commute anyplace otherwise - I just get too crazy.

5. You know what I've found, UBP?
I feel the same about driving in this area, as you know. I've found a little gem of a station--you may already know about it. It's the local NPR station--88.5 WAMU out of American University. It's wonderful! I feel like I learn something every time I listen, and it's soothing, and there's great local shows like Kojo Nandi and the Diane Riehm show. You should try it!

Is that a new Warren Zevon?

4. "Some Boots" by Karate and "Change" by the Dismemberment Plan
Best albums of 2002, by such a wide margin it ain't funny. Karate are a three piece band from DC who used to be an "emo" band, but now trade in jazzy, extended songcraft with dub-style dynamics, Steely Dan-esque harmonic whimsy, and holow-bodied guitar solos. Geoff Farina, the singer/guitarist, is phenominally talented on all fronts, and the band's interplay is a wonder to behold. The best thing about this album is that it sounds like three amazing musicians playing in a small room together; there is very little in the way of production trickery...a real LIVE sound, captured on tape. "Some Boots," the new album, has stayed in my CD player for over eight months...do yourself a favor and find it!

The Dismembermant plan are another band from DC whose story parallels that of Karate. They used to be the Darlings of the "emo" crowd, but now bear as little resemblance to the Get Up Kids as they do to Cutting Crew. The Plan features possibly the best rythym section in rock music right now. The lyrics are witty, and they, too, find some inspiration in Steely Dan's knotted jazz chords, but put them to the service of ROCKIN OUT. There is also some resemblance to the Talking Heads, Ben Folds, early Radiohead, and Fugazi.

Two absolutely essential albums!

I'm familiar with old Dismemberment plan, but haven't heard them in a while. I will have to check them out.

Speaking of Steely Dan, have you heard the new record? I was eyeing it up at the record store, but I haven't bought it yet.

Anything after "Aja" comes too close to "Weather Channel"- style funq muzak for my ears to handle. My favorites are "Katy Lied" and "Countdown to Ecstacy..."

I love bands who resemble Steely Dan! I prefer China Crisis, Prefab Sprout, and Sade to later-era Steely Dan, even though they sound pretty similar.

Just had to add that. I dunno why.

31. You know, the channel you go to to get your weather forecast.
"Next up on the Weather channel...Your local foecast... Accurate and dependable..."

Back when I had cable, they'd do the local forecast updates and in the background, they'd have some laughably lame fusion funk jazz in the background, like someone's brother at the station had a Spiro Gyra and Sting cover group and wanted the world to know about it. And an announcer would speak those words in quotes. In the band I had in high school, if somebody played something too lite fusiony (like a major seventh chord), We'd shout "Weather Channel!!!" at them to express our dislike.

Yes, The Dan puts on a great live show...If ya don't mind seeing a grown man play a Key-tar. Yuck!

Track 2--"I'm gonna get my shit together" is awesome too. There's a song on there called something like "Peace and Love" about faux-hippies that I LOL'd at. This band has a really fun sense of humor. I recommend it. If there's a Tower near you, it's on sale for $10.99.

... he's the guy that's been writing pretty much all of the songs for Depeche Mode since Vince Clarke left (after their first album).

... He has 2 solo albums of covers... which obviously sound somewhat like Depeche, but with less emphasis on dancy beats and more emphasis on different sounds and melodies.

as I remember it was pretty good. I'll have to dig it out of the stacks.

As for my own listening habits lately, I've mostly been going for older stuff, Chet Atkins, Herb Alpert. Though I got a couple of CDs in the mail this past week that I'm warming up to, Thrice and another group called Leaves, yet another band from Iceland. Kinda mershy but not bad.

The woman who plays Stacy's mom is undeniably smokin'. It pretty much follows the plot of the song--they're in the pool, and he's watching the mom undress through the window. She comes out for a massage with just the towl on, etc. Then there's a fantasy sequence in the end where she suddenly turns into this lingerie-clad vixen and writhes around on the kitchen table, while the kid watches with his eyes as big as dinner plates. :)

It's great.

35. Mine
I also bought the new Fountains Of Wayne, and it's one of the best of the year. One song, "Hung Up On You," is great country. I'd say they are a power pop band, but a power pop band with versatility. Sometimes, like on "Bought For A Song," they sound like Oasis. They have obvious 60s influences, too, and "Stacy's Mom" sounds like The Cars.

Also

Brooks And Dunn - Red Dirt Road: always have enjoyed them, but I love, love, love this one. They've expanded their honky tonk sound, and even the simpler songs have great delivery. They may be Repukes, but the bonus song does make fun of televangelists.

Michelle Branch - Hotel Paper: You know I'm a huge Michelle fan - she's my favorite of the new female singer/songwriters, though Rachel Farris is extremely close. This album does not disappoint like many reviewers say - it met my expectations. But both this album and The Spirit Room have their own strong points, so although Hotel Paper is more mature, they're pretty equal in enjoyability. Hotel Paper focuses on certain aspects of relationships, and isn't as punchy, but it's more diverse musically than The Spirit Room.

Carly Simon - Best Of: one of the best songwriters and torch singers. Just got into her.

Ultimate Disco: about half of it isn't worthwhile, but I sure do enjoy the half that I like.

Guster - Keep It Together: love it - you'd probably enjoy them if you're a Jayhawks fan like I am, or a fan of classic rock - which I also am.

Liz Phair - self-titled: a fun summer album, but does sound a little desperate.

I could list more, too..

I would like to hear the new Liz Phair. I keep hearing that it's "desperate", but I really don't mind a popped-uppy version of an indie artist.

If you like Carly Simon, you might like Stevie Nicks. I got into Stevie late (like just 5 years ago) and ended up buying all her albums and the box set. :)

Edited on Mon Jul-21-03 02:39 PM by Forkboy
But I'll tell ya anyways!

Pig Destroyer (quite possibly the most brutal, aggressive music I've ever heard...and that's saying something!)

5ive's Continuum Research Project (just a drummer and guitarist,no vocals)

Pelican (another vocaless band, heavy as a whale omelette!)

Lamb (nothing like anything else I'm listening to...in other words it's almost normal :) Kind of a jazzy technoish thing with awesome, sexy as hell vocals)

VoiVod (not up there with their late 80's stuff, but a solid CD nonetheless)

And the rest of CD case is holding at the moment;
The Melvins
Opeth
Cephalic Carnage
My Dying Bride
Loretta's Doll
Zoar
System of a Down
Warhorse
Agorophobic Nosebleed
Mastodon
Pong

In other words, lots of good music to play when the inlaws visit ;-)

It's good thing I dont have neighbors close by :D

on edit-I have to say that Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies have the second best punk band name of all time, second only to Sandy Duncan's Eye.MFATGG are a blast live...catch them if you can!

47. My goodness...
Years ago, when I was living in State College, I had a male customer who used to come in to my record store. He was quiet, mild-mannered, I found out later he was a pharmacist. He asked me out to dinner, I went, we had a pretty good time.

There was one thing wrong. He listened to death metal, EXCLUSIVELY. I ordered all kinds of stuff for him from my one-stop, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, etc etc. It was WEIRD. I couldn't resolve his quiet, mild-mannered personality with that insane music. And I'm pretty open-minded about music! I ended up not seeing him anymore because it was just too strange. I thought he was going to kill me in my sleep or something.

48. I'm very open minded, too
That's why I think if I become a critic that I might be able to review rap, death metal, techno, bubblegum pop, reggae, etc. I have albums from just about every genre (even rap and metal,) and could try to identify different levels of quality in music I don't normally like. We'd see, though - it's a good test at least. :)

50. You definately seem to be open minded mvd
but you'll still want to steer clear of nearly everything I suggest :)

Lamb is really good though, and almost easy listening...some people might get into them.

As for the rest...be afraid..be very afraid :)

I think I'd be a fair reviewer, but not the bubblegum pop.Thats the one form of music that I simply can't listen to or even respect.I'd be vicious!

52. Thanks!
I'll still check them out, though - wouldn't hurt. :)

I guess that I should have said I could be a pop reviewer - because I love certain pop. That way I could excuse low ratings for Britney and 'N Sync.

What kind of music are you talking about with those other groups? I have liked your taste before.

Thanks in advance as I have to go. :hi:

56. Here is my description of death metal:
Colored by the fact that I don't like it. :)

Your sonic experience will be:

Beginning of song: ominous guitar chords

Then: wall of crashing guitar that sounds less like music than like a full-grown bull having its intestines ripped out

Then: incoherent roared vocals. When I say "roared", I don't mean "screamed" or "shouted". I mean gutteral throat sounds with NO discernable melody. When I say incoherent, I mean you can pick out a word or two here and there. The lyrical content usually runs along the lines of

"KILL YOUR DOG! RAPE YOUR CAT!" or the like.

Then: more wall of guitar, possibly a drum solo (replete with more double bass drum than any human really needs)

Ending with: incoherent screaming that makes you picture the lead singer with little flecks of blood coming out of his vocal chords.

Cat :)

61. What she said!
Though I prefer to think of the vocals as cookie monster gargling broken glass...get it right dammit! :P

I'm also not sure the bands are as deep lyrically as "Kill your dog! Rape your cat!"

hey,it's fun music that scratches an itch, what can I say?

Other than that though you'd be best to heed Cat's words...you may think she's joking, but she's not :)

One person I didn't mention that you might like though is Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.Kinda sorta like a Tom Waits with normal vocals and even better lyrics.

yeah,it's my friends cd.I promised him I'd give it a real listen. It's not too bad at all, actually.

Lamb is the softest band on my list.It would qualify on Sesame Street as "one of these things is different from the rest" :)

49. It's certainly an aquired taste :)
I dont listen to it exclusively (until just the last couple months I wasn't listening to any),but I find myself drawn to some of it again.

Some of the people into it ARE weird, but most are just everyday Joe's like me...and I'm not weird at all

Morbid Angel are silly though...I can only take so much Satan crap.

And Cannibal Corpse is the band in the first Ace Ventura (when he goes into the club).I never took them too seriously either, but I do love the banned artwork on the CD covers :)

I have far more punk than metal of any kind, but lately that's whats hitting me.The new Pig Destroyer comes out soon and will be in Dolby 5.1 Surround...that should be good for getting rid of unwanted guests :)

68. Voivod's still putting stuff out?
I thought their stuff from the 80s, particularly Nothingface and Angel Rat, was brilliant. I'd read that the guy from Metallica was in a band with a very similar name--it's not the same band, is it?

73. it most certainly is the same band
Jason Newsted got them back together and they recorded a new one.The only original player missing is Blackie, the bass player, but Newsted more than handles it.

If you liked Angel Rat and Nothingface I suspect you'll like this one too.It might be a little harder than AR,but it's still the same VoiVod.And Away's artwork is better than ever (he's the drummer and does all their CD covers and layout artwork. He even did his own caligraphy for the lyrics on the first four albums.)

The new one is called VoiVod (how original lol).Steer clear of the CD's Negatron,Phobos,Kronik and VoiVod Lives though. They were done with just one original member and basically suck ass,but after Angel Rat they did The Outer Limits which is very good. Then they broke up and the drummer tried to keep the band name going, with bad results.

My favorite is Dimension Hatross,an intelligent, complex CD with a thrash edge and great lyrics (The Chaosmongers prefer to get away!)

If you're real curious and like Dimension Hatross go back one more CD to Killing Technology. It's raw, noisy and hard to get into but it's also a good one.

You can check out a few samples of the new one here;
http://www.voivod.com/album.html

the last sample is the song they made a video for. They're also appearing on the Ozzfest tour this year.Jason is playing for both VoiVod and Ozzy now.

And thats about all the Voivod info I possess :D

58. New Steve Wynn, fairly new John Doe
Strongly recommended. Free (and legal) mp3 links here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=15612&mesg_id=15612&page=70

I also gave the latest Jerry Douglas disc (Lookout For Hope) another try. Once I started ignoring the title number, 10 minutes of Jerry noodling, I found I liked the record much better. The vocal numbers, by Maura O'Connell and James Taylor, are outstanding. More info, not surprisingly, at www.jerrydouglas.com

70. Eddie Money?
I didn't realize people actually listened to Eddie Money by choice. I can't imagine someone thinking "I feel like putting on an Eddie Money CD right now." Never once have I stood at a jukebox, and stopped flipping through the CDs at "Eddie Money's Greatest Hits."

I'm not a huge Eddie Money fan, in case you couldn't tell. :-)

75. Giving this board a boost
I have three new disoveries that I love - Plumb, Gavin DeGraw, and Bleu. Plumb is in the Christian section, but don't be fooled - the album I bought, Beautiful Lumps Of Coal, has vague religious references at most. Like another band I love - Sixpence None The Richer - but Plum is more atmospheric in their music style. Plumb's a bit grungy at times. Tiffany Arbuckle Lee and Gavin DeGraw have wonderful voices. Gavin's style is 70s rock combined with his own thing, and Bleu is like pop underground. Especially love Plumb and Gavin DeGraw.
