A DAY IN THE LOUNGE - MONDAY, JULY 21, 2003 - THE DAILY THREAD
MONDAY "IN" THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD (A Day In The Lounge)

UNDERGROUNDRAIROAD FROM THE GIT-GO

Happy Monday everybody and welcome to MONDAY 'IN' THE UNDERGROUNDRAILROAD . Today, a surprise visit to our DU community. None other than the singing ICE CREAM TRUCK! How many of you await the recognizable music of your neighborhood ice cream truck and dart out of the house and scream, "STOP!"

Well today DU, the Ice Cream Truck will be parked in the Undergroundrailroad all day, prepared to take your order. Would you like a Milk Shake? Or perhaps a Banana Split! What about a ice cream root beer float (yummy). I also think it's a lot of fun to have an ice cream cone. I always try and beat it to the bottom before it melts all over the place!!

So whatever you have a hankerin' for, I can accommodate! So grab your ice cream and let's get to the daily.

WELCOME TO THE DRIVE-IN

In my youth there was a way that large families could enjoy themselves as a unit in their car, The Drive-In Theater. My memories are grand and had very little to do with the actual movie that I saw. First, I would love and adore that neon sign that lit up and flashed "DRIVE-IN" as you drove-"in". Now the next characterization is all my own, or perhaps, yours too. I LOVED the crunch, crunch sound of the gravel after you paid your ticket admission. After a while however, you would get MEAN looks from other patrons as you searched for a prime spot with your headlights on (I wonder why?)! Of course I would always prefer that we arrived early. I would absolutely adore the family play-ground. If we arrived before dawn, I would dart with my siblings, racing to the swings. My sister preferred the sandbox and would bring along her bucket and shovel to make pretend buildings. My next memory of the Drive-In was the often visited Concession Stand! Did you ever notice that food at the concession stand is so much better than the food you brought from home? My parents would pack a lunch basket full of fried chicken drumsticks, buttered bread and carrot sticks. The compromise was the cold beverages that would never stay "chilled" when you brought them along. So off we would go when the intermission started (wanna race me?) to the Concession Stand to purchase Soft Drinks and our favorite candy. We each had fifty-cents. At that time a soda was 25 cents and candy was 20 cents. We would pool our nickels and pennies together to purchase an extra candy bar that we would share. My mother would glance at us knowing full well what we had done, but we thought we were beating the system :)

Do you miss the Drive In? Well, sadly most of them are gone. Some of the Drive-In Theaters are considered landmarks and communities have fought very hard to save them from their demise.

Still determined to go to the Drive In? I found a link that will locate an existing Drive-In Theater in your state. Drive-ins.com will provide you with all the information you need and hopefully you will find one close to your home. Another site that I found interesting was Drive In Theater.com . They also have a list of Drive-In locations and some history to read.

In the meantime, wanna race me to the concession stand?

1. Hi undergroundrailroad
Answers:

1. How about a strawberry hot fudge sunday? Strawberry ice cream with hot fudge, peanuts and whipped cream. I've never heard of this combination before.

2. I remember the ice cream truck that used to come around our neighborhood when I was a kid. They didn't get too fancy. It was mainly those frozen treats you can get at the grocery store(you know push-ups, popcicles, ice cream bars) and ice cream cones. The truck would hit the end of our street with that music going and the kids would come out from all over the place.

3. I've been to a drive-in theater before when I was really young. I can vaguely remember the experience. I don't remember any of the movies we saw only the car with the speaker by the window and popcorn. My father loves popcorn and we would have this huge tub of popcorn that we were all sharing and I remember the drinks in paper cups from the concession stand.

8. Hey Droopy! Happy Monday to you.
Strawberry HOT fudge (ummmm) Let. see. Strawberry ice cream mixed with "hot" fudge (or cold fudge :-)
peanuts, and whipped cream. Yummyyyyyyy. Hello Baskin and Robbins??

Push-ups and Popsicles (grape) were without a doubt my favorite treats on the ice cream truck. Let me tell you, there was a time I only paid ten cents for a popsicle :)

Yes, I'm sure I understand about sharing the drinks at the drive in. Today they are very expensive, however, when I went to the concession stand the drinks were 25 cents and I thought THAT was expensive at the time.

Thanks for dropping in Droopy and checking out my day in the Undergroundrailroad. Oh, and gimme that buttered popcorn ;-)

Love ya,

Mina

2. Hi Mina! Happy Monday to You!
Liked your thoughts on the Drive-in Movies. I wish they were around but suppose the huge multiplexes have taken over. I went to one and it had several eateries inside.

1. My ice cream would be called "blazinJ". Something red (cherries/strawberries) with pecans (my favorite).
2. I have Mr. Softee in my neighborhood and we order banana splits all the time (they are very good, highly recommend).
3. Yes, I have been to the drive-in movies. I liked them very much and hope they make a return.

Have a great Monday Mina and thanks for the start of the week thread, something to make it positive.

9. Hay BJ, and Happy Monday to you :-)
Thanks for dropping in the Undergroundrailroad to check things out.

Now, lets get right to your responses.

Your ice cream would be called "blazinJ", Why? OK, I like this. Strawberry Ice cream, throw in some cherries and pecans (maybe a dash of white pepper for the "blazin"). Sounds good :)

You like Mr. Softee :) So do I! The truck is usually in my neighborhood with the familiar music. Do you know the tune. Ladadalaladadalala.

Thank ya very much!

I'm glad your a fan of the drive in movies! I also hope they return.

Have a great Monday and rest of your week BJ!

Love ya,

Mina

3. Good Morning, Mina! How's everything in the Underground?
Nice little Daily today. What memories. I'll answer the last question first by relating my memories of the Geronimo Drive-In in Sierra Vista, Arizona. We would go there every once in a while when my dad was stationed on Ft. Huachuca. It was rather unusual for a drive-in in that rather than being in a open field somewhere, it was squeezed between two occupied lots. Didn't matter, it was a lot of fun. I remember seeing "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" there. They would play old b&w westerns, too. We would get our ice cream ('nother question, there) at Dairy Queen, and later, Baskin Robbins, and head to the show. Get this: We coud get my whole family, Mom, Dad, me, my brother and sister into my dad's 1973 VW Bug. We were a lot younger then. What times.

1.) Bob's Fudge-Bomb Blowout. Chocolate Ice Cream, fudge chunks, ripples of mint and butterscotch, and whipped cream flavor mixed in. Also, slices of marischino cherries. How does that sound?

2.) Same place and time as the Drive-In memory, Ft. Huachuca, Arizona early '70's. An ice cream truck showed up in the neighborhood every morning around 11:30, just in time for lunch. I would get a Bomb-Pop. That was my absolute favorite.

Boondocks was right on the nailhead, today. Have a terrific day, Mina!

11. Good Monday Aristus/Bob! So good to see you today!

Oh Aristus, I read that story twice only because I love it when people share those personal happy stories! Yes, what memories. The DAIRY QUEEN! I ALWAYS got the cone DIPPED in chocolate that would form a hard shell. I would MARVEL at how they could do that! My sister liked the Dilly Bars and that was the nickname I have her "Dilly" because she LOVED the DAIRY QUEEN Dilly Bars :) Yes, when BASKIN AND ROBBINS "31 flavors" appeared I dropped the DAIRY QUEEN and started a love affair with BASKIN AND ROBBINS and ROCKY ROAD!!

Now for your self invented flavor of ice cream. "Bob's Fudge-Bomb Blowout"! Chocolate Ice Cream, fudge chunks, ripples of mint and butterscotch, and whipped cream flavor mixed in. Also, slices of marischino cherries.

How does that sound? It sound GREAT! HELLO BASKIN AND ROBBINS!! And guess what Aristus, my brother LOVED the Bomb-Pops!

Oh Aristus, I just LOVED! your comments that you shared today. We should do this again. :hi:

Yes, The Boondocks, as usual was ON!

4. Hey UGRR!
:hi:

1. Probably a chocolate or coffee flavor base with pralines and carmel swirled in. I love ice cream and nuts together!

2. Well, I lived in the country and ice cream trucks don't come out this far. Ditto pizza delivery. The only regular contact I had with an ice cream truck was when I lived in an apt complex in Laurel MD...in my mid-20s! I really enjoyed seeing him come around every evening. Who says you have to grow up?

3. No, never went to a Drive-in. The drive-in closest to me had stooped to showing adult movies by the time I came along. Today, I enjoy going to movies shown outdoors at the art museum. Not quite a drive-in, but you can bring your blankets, lawn chairs and picnic supper and sit anywhere you want!

13. Hey Supernova! How is your Monday going ?

Supernova, I've been wanting to ask you have you seen that Disney Movie that had a rock band in outer space called "Supernova"? I loved the movie and when I see your handle, I always smile :)

Well, how was your weekend and how is your Monday? Hope all is well.

Let's see your flavor is chocolate and coffee flavors as a base with pralines and carmel swirled in! HELLO BASKIN AND ROBBINS! Sounds like a pep-me-up ice cream.

Supernova, I think you understand my daily today. You are correct, why do we have to grow up 100%? Let's allow 10% for child-like fun! Those ice cream trucks are the greatest and to be honest, I see more adults than kids sometimes.

I like the idea of movies being shown outdoor with the blankets, lawn chairs and picnic supper. Actually that IS the concept of a Drive-IN. Same thing in my eyes ;-)

Thanks for sharing your stories with me today. I appreciate your visit in the undergroundrailroad very much :hi:

6. Happy Monday!!!
I miss drive-ins! They were always such fun. I remember sneaking people in the trunk and under blankets in the beds of trucks because you paid by the car-load! :D

My own ice cream flavor? Ummm, can't think of a name, but double chocolate and raspberry creme would be the ingredients! :9 We never had an ice cream truck in my neighborhood as a kid. :-( As an adult, that infernal ringing bell song got on my nerves!

16. OK, What's the Deal GOP? Where have you and your golf-cart been? Hugh?!
So, you DO miss drive-ins. Now, you KNOW I remember as a teen about sneaking in the boys. We would make them duck down in the back seat (yes, with the blankets) and guess what, WE GOT BUSTED! They wanted to get in the trunk but I said "no" because I didn't want anyone to get hurt :( But those were the days. GOP? How could you sneak anyone in the drive-in with the golf cart? The "dos" and "donts" when going to the drive-ins. I think there were a few (NO MAKING OUT!).

Now the GOP FLAVOR would contain "double chocolate and raspberry creme" yummy. We could call it GOPISEVIL, yes? Let me tell you something, there was once a story in the news several years ago about Ice cream truck music rage. Once this man who heard the song and when it got on his very last NERVE he ran out and followed the truck yelling and screaming. I think the ice cream truck hit "something" (tree?). Does anyone remember that???

Well, thanks for dropping in to the Undergroundrailroad and have a great rest of your week. See ya next week GOP :hi:

7. Hi, undergroundrailroad and DU
What a nice summer topic this is!

1) Apple vanilla - a topping that's not fattening. :)

2) There was this ice cream man of Iranian heritage named Fred. I was a shy kid and all the other kids would push in front of me, so Fred made sure to call me first - I really liked him. Loved the bomb pops.

3) Yes, when I was a kid, in Rockville, MD - but I don't remember the movie or the experience.

OK, another KOOL KID ! Gimme a lick of your BOMB POP!

As far as the ice cream is concerned, I got tired of cherries, and I always have apples for a snack. So apple vanilla made sense. Glad you like it!

10. Hello!
1. Invent the name of your very own Ice Cream Flavor. What would the ingredients be?

Dark chocolate, with ribbons of orange syrup and hazelnuts. Call it, Orange you nuts about chocolate?

2. Do you have an ice cream truck experience you would like to share?

I do have several ice cream truck experiences, but they're really bad. They have to do with me being a 13-year-old sex addict. nuf said.

3. Have you ever been to a Drive-In Theater?

I used to LOVE to go to the drive-in. The dusk to dawn hooror fests were the best. My dad and I used to go all the time in the summer. It was great, until it became to much of a teen party zone, then it was too loud to enjoy the movies. The drive-in closed pretty soon after that.

I won't even go NEAR the ice cream truck experience. As you put it "nuf said".

I see you enjoyed Drive-In movies. I hope the link can provide you with information about the outcome of your drive-in that closed and, perhaps, direct you to another one. Wait, your in NY? Whitestone Drive-in? I wonder if that is still open?

Thanks for stopping by RB to say hello to me and hope you have a great rest of your week. Best wishes and take care.

(2) No special ice cream truck experiences. Mine were pretty typical, I'd assume. :-)

(3) I've never(!) been to a drive-in theater.

20. Hi all
(First, Mina could you check your email or PMs. :lovya:)

Now for the questions.

1. My icecream would have deep chocalte icecream, almonds, fudge, and chocalate chips. I'd call it the chocaholics dream.

2. In summers, the icecream man came every week day around 2 pm. We were allowed to get ice cream if we had done our chores. My favorite were push ups or snow cones. I bought some at a store awhile ago, and they just aren't the same.

3. Aww, Drive ins. My family used to go several times a month when I was little. I was the youngest of the children and I usually fell asleep.:( We usually went to see the "Beach" movies with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funnicello. Weird.

24. Hi Sis!
Yes, I'll check them after I type my response to you.

Now let's get straight to your questions.

Your special ice cream would have deep chocolate ice cream base with almonds, fudge, and chocolate chips. It would be called "Chocaholics DREAM" ! WOW, HELLO BASKIN AND ROBBINS! I'd like to share an ice cream cone with you :) :)

It sounds like we had similar routines in our youth. Our Ice Cream truck came promptly at 3:30 PM and we were NOT permitted to buy ice cream unless our chores and/or homework was complete. There were inspections, so no chores, no ice cream truck :( I also agree with you about the quality of the ice cream today vs. yesteryears, it's just NOT the same, especially the push ups (the orange sherbet ).

Now on to the drive-ins. I remember very well the the "Beach" movies with Annette Funnicello. I liked her so much because *I* wanted to be a Musketeer ! :)

Have a great Monday and I'm not going to check my email.

Love, your sister,

My kids gave me an ice cream maker for Father's day, so I have been getting to experiment with my own flavors lately. This weekend we made blueberry ice cream and chocolate/cherry pie filling ice cream. They were both great.

2. My ice cream truck experience--not so good. Crying hysterically the first time it came 'round after I found out I have diabetes; 7 yrs old. 'Course that was a VERY long time ago; now I indulge my son and myself once in a while.
3. I miss drive-ins so much. M&D used to pop a HUGE bag o' popcorn, pack the cooler with Coke and, ugh, Tab, and put me in my pjs. One of these days we may just take my tikester out to one (not in an AZ summer, though!).

How are you? Think of you quite often. Hope you having a good day.

How well I understand your story of diabetes, being diabetic myself and insulin dependent. I know this is very personal information I'm sharing here but I think it's important for people to understand that Diabetes is not a bad word and more education is needed.

Aweeee, I like the pj's and the drive in :) with the popcorn and Tab. Actually, I can only drink diet soda because I have an aversion to regular soda, to much sugar :)

29. Hi!
1. Invent the name of your very own Ice Cream Flavor. What would the ingredients be?

I'd remane Ben & Jerry's From Russia With a Buzz after myself because it is my favorite ice cream flavor.

2. Do you have an ice cream truck experience you would like to share?

I had a great ice cream man growing up named Eddie.

3. Have you ever been to a Drive-In Theater?

I use to go often when I was little. My mom would dress my brother and I up in our pjs and we'd meet up with her best friend Terry and her son. We'd all run around the park and lay on top of the car when watching the movie.

I still go a couple of times a year of course I'm a bit too old to run around a park in my nightgown now ;-) .

Just so everyone knows, *I* asked Jazzy if I could adopt her. I always wanted a daughter but have all boys. Yet, she embodies everything I have ever wanted in a daughter. She even looks like me and my boys. So, Jazzy, you have a DU Mom, who admires you very much.

Not really into the ice cream trucks, but you recognized the constant music. (some don't like the music)
But you STILL have a Drive-In Theater in your area! Yeahhhh! Wow, that's great PP.

Thanks for your participation today and I look forward to your visits again!

34. Hi there!
Thanks for that interesting welcome.
What about some strange flavor for an ice cream, there is unique fruit in Chile, they call it "Chirimoya" it's a mix of avocate with some banana texture, but smells like an apple and it's taste is reaslly sweet, mix this with this strange fruit in China, looks like berry and its taste like a dry lemon, the name don't mind.

I have a very weird situation with the ice cream truck, I was sitting on the front yard with my cousins and the music of the truck appears, so we run over the truck and the truck stoped. We were waiting for the guy to appears at the window of the truck, when he scared the hell of us! my cousin pee himself right there and the guy laugh of us and then apologize and gave us an ice cream to all of us.

I've been in a drive inn theater, but I was with a friend and eating a lot of chocolate he started to throwing up so I couldn't see any movie.

38. Hi Spicy Hot. Thanks for dropping into the Undergroundrailroad.
Thanks for your compliments. They are very much appreciated.

Now, I like your interesting ice cream description, "Chirimoya". Scrumptious fruits, some exotic will a mix of banana texture then throw in strange fruits from China. WOW! Thank you for making me want to explore ice cream as an ethnic dessert in the future. I have tired "green tea" and "red bean" ice cream and it is very very good.

Thanks SpicyHot (btw, I like your DU name) for dropping into say hello and I hope you come back to visit again.

Love ya,

Undergroundrailroad

39. Better late than never!
1. My ice cream flavor is called Panna Cotta. It means "cooked cream" in Italian, and it would have a creamy-smooth texture, with tastes remiscent of caramel, coffee and rum. :-)

2. I'll never forget the summer of '81, as my dear brother, who recently passed away, drove an ice cream truck. We gorged ourselves on (free?) Scooter Crunches that idyllic summer.

3. Of course I've been to the drive-in! My father loved it so much... cheap, carload of kids, popcorn... who could ask for more? The last drive-in movie I truly remember was Escape From Alcatraz. Yes, it shows my age, and yes, that movie is far too dark (cinemography-wise) to appreciate at the drive-in. But who cared? We were kids, it was summer, it was fun!

As always, another sublime thread from Mina. :-)

Thanks for making me smile, UGRR!
- Jennifer

40. I'm late, too.
But I couldn't let the fact that I was out of hte country allow me to miss a Monday in the UGRR. :-)

My favorite ice cream would have to be a calorie-free, sugar-free, fat-free version of Ben & Jerry's "Chubby Hubby". Yummmmmmm. (And their politics are pretty cool, too.) Maybe call it "Less than Chubby Hubby" or something like that. Those cholocate covered pretzels are to die for! It's been a long time since I've eaten any ice cream and now I crave it. Gotta get that thought out of my head quickly!

We never had ice cream trucks where I was growing up. They had one in my grandfather's neighborhood in Massachusetts so I saw them on occasion. My first paying job was at a Dairy Queen though. My girlfriend's family owned it and my sister and I worked there.

We always went to drive-ins. As kids in jammies and later as an adult. I remember one night watching the movie "Nicholas and Alexandra" (early 70s) and we also got to watch the Aurora Borealis in the sky. It was absolutely beautiful! There are a couple Drive Ins still in Maine but it's been a while since I've gone to one.

I truly enjoy your posts and I look forward to each Monday. Thanks! :-)
