20. He also struggled with Juvenile Diabetes while he played the game
He has lost both his legs to the disease, but he remains one of the most positive, optimistic persons you could ever meet.

I love listening to him do the Cubs games on the radio.

WE LOVE YOU RONNIE!!!!

You are #1.

4. Bruce Sutter
Goose Gossage
Dave Parker
Ted Simmons
Andre Dawson

Sutter and Gossage not being in the Hall is a travesty. They, along with Rollie Fingers, pretty much invented the position of closer.

9. Lee Smith has 478 saves. Hoyt Whilhelm and Rollie Fingers...
were primarily releivers, with much less saves, and they are in.
Trevor Hoffmann will eclipse Smith's record and when his time comes. should also be in Cooperstown.

18. Saves don't mean as much these days.
3-run lead with nobody out in the ninth? What a joke. Wilhelm, Gossage, Lyle... and even the best of all, Dan Quisenberry (who, sadly, only played for 9 years and is therefore ineligible) came into tie games quite a bit.

After all, when should your BEST reliever be in a game? When it's tied or close, or when you have a lead of THREE FREAKIN' RUNS?

37. Guys like Sutter and Gossage
Would routinely come out of the bullpen in the 7th inning, with runners on base.

Calling it a "save" to get 3 outs with bases empty and a 3 run lead is crap.

Nor should the accusations, never proven, that he bet on baseball.

Babe Ruth bet on baseball, and he's in.

So did Ty Cobb.

Cobb did bet on games (with Tris Speaker). I've never heard an allegation that Ruth did. Can you sustantiate that claim?

31. I'll second Pete Rose
It's embarassing, if you look at the sordid history of much of this game and its players, that Rose is still barred because "he bet on baseball." To imagine baseball dancing atop a chair in horror, skirts around its knees, wailing "But he BET on the game! He BET! Oh the HORROR!"

Get a grip, baseball fans, and do some research; there are a lot of hall of famers who could've been jailed for other far more heinous crimes, yet still have made the cut. Rose has spent the better part of 2 decades in exile; he's paid his debt, and is due.

42. Another vote for Charlie Hustle
I'll also vote for Pete Rose. For Major League Baseball to ban Pete from working in baseball because he apparently bet on baseball is understandable but to ban him from making ceremonial appearances at baseball games and ineligible for the Hall of Fame I feel is just wrong. Based on his accomplishments as a player either he should be in the Hall of Fame or the Hall of Fame has no credibility.

13. Mel Famey.
He was a pitcher for the Brewers back in the '70's. He was DEFINITELY Hall of Fame material. But he was an alcoholic and it ruined his career. It got so bad that he was actually taking a can of beer out onto the field with him. He'd take a swig and then stick the can in his back pocket and pitch. One game, late in his last season, he was totally shitfaced, walking batter after batter until the manager finally yanked him. As he was walking off the field, the play-by-play guy asked his color man, "What's that sticking out of his back pocket?" The color man answered "That's the beer that made Mel Famey walk us!"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Really had ya going there, dint I?

3) Dick Allen
4) Ted Simmons
5) Goose Gossage

Dewey Evans, Darrell Evans, and Sutter are on the list as well, but not before these guys.

Ask me who SHOULDN'T be in out of those already enshrined, and the list'll be a lot longer. Let's start by tossing out everyone elected by the Frankie Frisch-era veterans committee of the '70s....

25. McGwire is on the bubble.
Mostly because of the creatine usage. He didn't hit for high average, his defensive prowess was average at best. His home run numbers are his one claim to the HOF, but many voters will look on his feats with a sharper eye.

Winningest pitcher of the 1980's. Ace of 3 World Series Champs' pitching staffs (Tigers, Twins, Blue Jays).

Detroit stars never get any credit. The national media pretty much shits on every great Detroit team and its great players, with the exception of the Red Wings (who play the least popular of all 4 major sports).

36. A few
Tony Oliva (.304 lifetime average, 3 batting titles. The Koufax of hitters in terms of career length vs. excellence - no one was more feared in the mid-60s. If you never saw him play, think Albert Pujols - great eye and power to all fields.)

Ron Santo (great player and a great Cub)
Bert Blyleven (287 wins, 3700 strikeouts)
Jim Kaat (283 wins)
Jack Morris (three WS rings with three different teams, 233 wins, winningest pitcher of the 1980s)

The guy had it all, hit for average, power, was a decent fielder and baserunner.
One of my favorite playes from the 60's.

He wasnt much of a hitter but Paul Blair was the best defensive Outfielder that I have ever seen.

A great ballplayer -- who absolutely murdered us through his career. Jerry Hairston was another. So were Luis Leal and Dennis Lamp.
