2. I think the washing machine eats them. I have the same problem.
I don't know though, maybe it's the dryer.

How in the heck do those shoes end up there anyway?

11. The sock monster eats them
Said monster lives behind the dryer, and comes out after you load the clothes in. He only needs to eat a few socks a month, and always one at a time.

but when I keep running the strays through the dryer, why won't he eat those too?

15. He doesn't pay attention to the type or color of sock
He's not trying to eat matched pairs, any more than you make an effort to eat look-a-like Cheez-Its or Animal Crackers. He just reaches in and grabs one. Eventually, all of your socks will disappear if you don't replace the ones he eats.

21. Yup!
Unscrew the vent from your dryer, and give it a good cleaning. A toilet brush works pretty well. You'll be surprized at what ends up in there.

25. My solution
I buy the same color and type of socks- 2 packages of white and dark blue one package of brown. Never know if they are partnerless, or find a mate for them easily. Then when one gets a hole it get thrown out and a partner is easily found.

Which is a good thing, since between the 3 kids, we have a ton of unmatched socks. :-)
