The choices in men's business dress are fairly limited. The tie should be the focal point of your ensemble.

All of the worst people I've known have been "suits", with the exception of my dad.

Besides, men's clothing evolved for centuries. Why the hell have we been stuck on basically the same format for men's businesswear for 100 years now? It's time for a new model.

Talk about torture. At least in the office it was freezing cold, but walking to and from the train station and to lunch was an ordeal, even with just a long-sleeve dress shirt and tie and no jacket.

Florida is not fit for human habitation.

I wear a suit when I go to visit my customers. I don't have to, since I own my company. It's a simple sign of respect to dress in a businesslike manner when conducting business...but that's just my opinion.

Besides, Mrs R. says I look hot when I wear a suit, and that's enough reason for me, all by itself.

... but it has to be the single most idiotic article of men's apparel still in use. It has no function, is dry clean only, can constrict the neck and invariably gets wrecked with dropped food. I always leave it a little loose except in court.

The single most idiotic item of clothing in use period are women's shoes whose only purpose is to cripple, since they offer no traction, warmth, protection etc.

Why do women, with the plethora of clothing options they have, insist that men look so nice in the single option of dress clothing that exists in the male wardrobe? A group of men in suits look like a bunch of cloned droids.

Why do men have no other options for dress?

I wear clothes for comfort or warmth, cotton or wool only.

I won't wear a suit or tie for anybody or any event.

just to look twice as impotent.

I wear ties when I am in court or other formal situations. In cases of public hearings, wearing a suit & tie, though it is silly, grants you a status than wearing a normal outfit doesn't. I have tried to teach my son that it is something that doesn't mean one has sold their soul; rather, it helps you achieve your goal.

There are not many options in a man's dress wardrobe to start with. The Tie is a bright spot in an otherwise dull closet. Some diversity is long overdue in the mans wardrobe.

I wear a tie because in my profession they used to wear ties. It's a show of respect for what you are doing, that you take it seriously. As well, I find I'm taken more seriously.
Couple that with a great quote in Angela's Ashes, "A man with no tie has no self-respect." Of course the guy who said that (Frank's Dad) was a drunk who drank the dole. But were he sober with a job it woulda been totally legit.
PLUS, I feel it may be old fashion, however it does show a modicum of self-respect and formality when dealing with others. A courtesy long gone in the fucking world.

plus bow-ties and cravates.

There is no other way that a man can get away with wearing brightly coloured silk (or at least wearing it visibly) except pocket handkercheifs.

There is so much potential variety, and a change of tie can change the entire appearance of an outfit (and let's face it - how many people have more than 20 suits, compared with those who have more than 20 ties).

That said, most men make a total hash of wearing ties - to be honest most men make a total hash of everything connected with clothing. A tie must be worn properly, some pointless straggly knot won't work - the colour has to work with the shirt and jacket.
