Post your favorite muse
Me, it's Polyhymnia, muse of sacred poetry/song. Though Calliope is a close second.

1. Euterpe has always been a favorite
Euterpe glanced her fingers o'er her lute,
And lightly waked it to a cheerful strain,
Then laid it by, and took the mellow flute,
Whose softly flowing warble filled the plain:
It was a lay that roused the drooping soul,
And bade the tear of sorrow cease to flow;
From shady woods the Nymphs enchanted stole,
While laughing Cupids bent the silver bow,
Fluttering like fays that flit in Luna's softened glow.

2. That's beautiful!
Makes me cringe all the more at rap and the poetry you find in Reader's Digest and Christian bookmarks.

Euterpe and Colliape are almost interchangable, really. I'm glad that our interests are so close!

3. I used to know more about
them. I have forgotten everything, sad to say. I was appreciative that you brought this up because it made me remember there were finer things in my life in the years past. Not this slogging through we have all been doing lately.

As much as I hate to admit it, I had to look up a site to remember. Gods, I used to know them all but I could not remember if it was Euterpe or Colliape that I favored. Here is the site, it is quite nice.

4. Cool! I just found out from that site that their brother is Crotus
who was transported into the sky as Sagittarius upon his death.

I'm a Sagittarius! Maybe that's why the muses have fascinated me since childhood so much.

6. Well since we share
the same birthday it makes perfect sense!

Terpsichore is very nice as well.

And when Terpsichore, with iris-plume,
Bade o'er her lute her rosy fingers fly;
'T was pleasure all--the fawns in mingled choirs,
Glanced on the willing nymphs their wanton fires,
Joy shook his glittering pinions as he flew;
The shout of rapture and the song of bliss,
The sportive titter and the melting kiss,
All blended with the smile, that shone like early dew.

Edited on Tue May-31-05 11:10 PM by tjdee

Terpsichore is so cool because, if your friends don't dance, then they're no friends of mine.

But if we're talking real people, I'd say currently it's Jamie Bell.
It's usually very expressive men.

I've always wondered. It's like you just woke up one morning, were in a bad mood and made a sound with your mouth and it sounded like "rabrrrrrr" and you said "hey great screen name."

24. Stolichnaya, the muse of vodka martinis
Either that or Erato, you tell me...

Matins

We leave the bed where your fingers
are a long, thin surprise, where your tongue
tells me slow stories. I watch you,
In the daylight, bring your hand
to my face, to my mouth. I tuck
pieces of myself behind
in the tangle of our bodies.
We make our way onto buses,
we pass old women who sit
rocking and tapping their feet,
we blow our noses, clear our throats.
It's just life picking us up,
moving us from one place to
the next. We fumble for our keys,
tie our shoes, greet people we
care nothing for greeting. But
today, when you reach into your
pocket, you'll find the curve of my
neck, you'll brush away my hair
from your cheek. I'll slip inside
your shirt, lie flat against your chest.
Your hands will catch themselves
reaching. And the scent of me, the
scent you long for, will draw you home.

28. ....
i like my body when it is with your
body. It is so quite a new thing.
Muscles better and nerves more.
i like your body. i like what it does,
i like its hows. i like to feel the spine
of your body and its bones, and the trembling
-firm-smooth ness and which i will
again and again and again
kiss, i like kissing this and that of you,
i like, slowly stroking the, shocking fuzz
of your electric fur, and what-is-it comes
over parting flesh . . . . And eyes big love-crumbs,

and possibly i like the thrill

of under me you quite so new

30. And another favorite of mine......
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 01:05 AM by Bouncy Ball
(more subtle)

"Putting in the Seed" Robert Frost

You come to fetch me from my work to-night
When supper's on the table, and we'll see
If I can leave off burying the white
Soft petals fallen from the apple tree.
(Soft petals, yes, but not so barren quite,
Mingled with these, smooth bean and wrinkled pea)
And go along with you ere you lose sight
Of what you came for and become like me,
Slave to a springtime passion for the earth.
How Love burns through the Putting in the Seed
On through the watching for that early birth
When, just as the soil tarnishes with weed,

The sturdy seedling with arched body comes
Shouldering its way and shedding the earth crumbs.

I mean HELLO? ROWR. Most people don't know Frost has some sexy poetry.

36. She's not my muse, but as a muse I always enjoyed Cosima Wagner
for Nietzsche. Imagine him stumbling around Turin and Sils in his last days, addled with advanced syphillis, obsessively wondering what Cosima thought of his "tropes."

I'm sure Cosima had taken an unlisted number by that point.
