Girl rescues 5-year-old from fire

Propped up on a couch with a teddy bear Monday, bandages wrapped around her burned feet and wrists, and on enough pain-killing morphine to make her sick, 11-year-old Breanne Gaines told the story of one nightmarish sleepover.

She had spent Sunday night with her friend and neighbor Kimberlee Dresnek, 11. The girls slept in a tent on a small porch right outside the kitchen door of the Dresneks' trailer in Dimond Estates Mobile Home Park off Arctic Boulevard.

Just before 5 a.m. Monday, Breanne and Kimberlee awoke to the sound of Kimberlee's mother screaming.

The trailer was on fire. And so was the tent.

Breanne remembers she was scared and crying, but her thoughts, she said, were about saving Kimberlee and Kimberlee's 5-year-old sister, Brianna, who was still in the home.
