7. They're a cross between an apple and a concord grape
They look and have the texture of a normal apple, but they smell and kind of taste like a concord grape.

They are absolutely delicious! :9

8. Orins are by far the best
The sweetest, and the most fragrant apples I've ever had.

Galas are second.

11. We're kind of spoiled here
Edited on Fri May-27-05 09:01 PM by Art_from_Ark
We get Fujis all the time during season-- straight from Aomori Prefecture, individually wrapped up in their packing box. Beats the crap out of the apple-like things sold in supermarkets.

By the way, some Japanese farmers wrap up the apples while they are developing on the trees to reduce the use of pesticides.

13. the little organic ones from British Columbia are excellent
They are about half the size of some of the monster Fujis I've seen in the supermarkets, but sweet and flavourful.

14. I get them at Costco.
This particular bag is amazing.. Just sitting on the counter ripening they've scented my entire kitchen!

I'm making carrot/fuji/strawberry juice tomorrow for breakfast. It makes me feel high all day long. :)

15. When I was a kid in Brooklyn (many years ago)
Edited on Fri May-27-05 11:44 PM by pnorman
Mcintosh was the local favorite, but I LOVED Delicious apples. (During the Depression, EVERYTHING tasted good!). But here in Seattle, Delicious apples taste blaaaah. Instead, I buy Fuji, Gala, or Braeburn. Several years ago, I used to see Criterion apples at some stalls at the Pike Market, but no longer. Most of the stall people never even heard of them. Those I liked more than any of the others. Anyone here familiar with that species?

On edit: Here's the dope on Criterion apples: http://www.produceoasis.com/TipOTDay_folder/Tips_folder/Oct7tip.html
