Tourist Rolls Over SUV On World's Crookest Street
Tourist Rolls Over SUV On World's Crookest Street

POSTED: 1:47 pm PDT May 27, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO -- A tourist flipped his rented SUV on the world-renowned "crookedest street," police say.

The unidentified man, driving the sport utility vehicle with Washington state license plates, realized Thursday he was driving with his emergency brake on. He tried to fix the problem, but soon smelled smoke and burning brakes. He pulled over, put the car in neutral and looked for the brake release, said Sgt. Neville Gittens, San Francisco police spokesman.

He found it, but as soon as he released it, the vehicle started to roll downhill on Lombard Street. Eventually, the SUV flipped onto its side. Gittens said at least three other passengers also were in the vehicle.

2. I thought they banned traffic on Lombard?
With the exception of people that live there.

5. That bites.
My mom used to want to drive down there when she would visit and I wouldn't let her.

I'd HATE to have to put up with that shit.

4. What a moran.
"I'm going to go visit a city I'm completely unfamiliar with that's already tricky to drive in even for longtime residents, and I'm gonna rent me a big-ass SUV that I'm not sure how to handle, and take it down a steep hill composed of nothing but hairpin turns!"

What. An. Idiot.

7. So many time I almost got ran over.
I used to live near Union SQ and there:

1. Tons of Rental Car Places

2. Lots of one-way streets.

I've had to "greet" so many tourists that came hauling ass and took wrong way turns. One time I had drive my scooter up the sidewalk to avoid getting hit head on.

8. I'm amazed no one else was hurt or killed.
Lombard is crawling with as many pedestrians as it is cars, so that idiot is damn lucky the SUV didn't roll over onto another person or car.

14. Washington has some of the WORST drivers
I just got back from driving 4,000 miles and encountered the very worst drivers in WA state.

One jerk made a right in front of me -- he had the red light -- I had the green light for a left hand turn. In fact there were two cars that turned illegally.

Then I had my signal on to turn left and that is the exact time the truck behind me decided to pass.

Thank goodness I am skilled at defensive driving.

Really sad -- in over 4,000 miles to find the worst drivers in my own back yard.
