stupid, dangerous stuff you did that your parents never knew about
...or they'd have KILLED you physically.

my list is long, i used to climb all over treacherous bluffs and caves and ledges, climb up under railroad trestles over the river and watch trains go overhead, climb all over heavy earth moving machinery at night, break into railroad boxcars, swim in the mississippi, play with dead river rats, and climb into underground drainage pipes.

my parents would have really let me have it if they'd known.

and let's not even talk about the rebellious teenage years.

1. BB gun wars. Bottle rocket wars. Climbing on oil well pumpers and riding
them. Climing the water tower. Climbing radio towers. Way too much to list here.

But my parents weren't overprotective. These days, though, parents would freak at the stuff my little group used to do.

13. Bottle rocket wars! YEAH!
It helped that I had some friends whose parents owned a fireworks stand. We had year-round access to rocket ammo. We were always raiding the inventory.

Great times!

2. I used to jump off my roof...and...
there was a construction site in our neighborhood, and we used to climb around in the unfinished structure.

I would have been killed for sure if my dad had found out.

All the fun stuff. Had they'd have known though, they'd certainly have put me in military school.

21. actually the order would be..
blowing shit up, drugs then sex. I used to have a friend with ready access to cordite and black powder, so when I was like 12 or so, blowing stuff up out in the woods was the thing to do.

Drugs would have come shortly thereafter with my first joint at 13. I've tried most everything but needle drugs and survived. I guess i'm one of the lucky ones.

Sex had to wait till 14 when I had a crush on Sarah Ferguson. She had the sexy def leoppard t-shirt collection, spandex and ripped stonewashed jean ensemble, feathered hair, blue eyeshadow and trailer trash attitude that I couldn't resist. Hey, it was 1984. She broke my cherry in a house that was under construction a couple of blocks from the development we both lived in.

Good times!

5. Climbed the water tower multiple times in high school.
Painted a lot of shit up there. It was right across the street from the entrance to my neighborhood, and my parents never knew that it was me, and my bf who lived across the street. Our parents thought we were good girls. They were pretty smug about it too. This was back in the days of hippie freaks.

6. train hopping
ride them out a ways then jump off when it slowed for a curve. We'd even jump across moving box cars like in the westerns, tho only at yard speeds, 5-7mph. A kid or so a year from our area was killed doing that stupid kind of shit.

8. Went on a NY Eve picnic..1 below zero.... I only had a light jacket
the car we were in slid off the road and down an embankment (parents thought we were at the movies).. Four of us./.in knee-deep snow about 50 miles from home..hitch-hiking to get back home.. We were actually even robbed by a guy who gave us a lift.. he took our money and dumped us out on the road.. Doug (one of the guys) had lost a shoe climbing out of the car, so we walked for hours, him without a shoe.
Finally a trucker picked us up and delivered us back to our hometown..(lectured us all the way)..

I have never been so cold in my life...

Never told my parents

17. Got drunk while camping (17) and rolled down a 150 foot bluff naked...
My friends carried me to the emergency room to get my head stitched, then I used makeup to hide facial scratches and wore long pants and long sleeved shirts to hide the bruises and lacerations. It was a pretty famous story around school and maybe ten years I told my folks and they laughed and claimed they already knew.

Smoking pot with strangers under same overpass.

Co-ed campouts on the undeveloped land behind my friend's house.

A big shoplifting spree at Six Flags (the only time I've ever shoplifted, and I made a big day of it, including a contest with my friends).

26. it was hearing about the things that my parents did...
that stopped me from doing dangerous things. Quite frankly I'm surprised that they both made it to an age where they were able to procreate. My dad used to play a game called "fire escape tag" and yes it is exactly how it sounds, and that's just the tame stuff. Growing up in the city was rough...nothing like a few scared straight stories from your parents to keep you out of trouble!

30. Free solo rock climbing
Took a half day in my senior year of high school. I would go to the local crag and free solo(unroped) almost everyday after school.
In elementary school we would sometimes crawl through the storm drains home instead of walking.
I would say smoking at 11 and pot at 13 but my mom found out about those.

32. I have a long list too...
We crawled through all the city drainage pipes. I have a picture of my little brother taken under the railroad trestles that I was afraid to show my parents; maybe I still am. (But it is so cool being under there right next to the wheels as the trains go over! The noise and shaking is awesome.)

We once snuck onto a site where they were blasting a new highway. We figured we'd be okay if we hid out in the nearby trees we knew were protected. (How, we knew this, I don't know. This was before they'd use that orange plastic fencing.) Wow. Big Wow.

We also made explosives. We lived in an agricultural area where it wasn't difficult to get potasium nitrate and other... well, I won't go there. But mostly we mixed the potasium nitrate with sugar, which made a smoldering red lava when ignited which was perfect for burning plastic army men. We mixed gasoline with styrofoam too...

When my grandfather was a kid he said you could buy dynamite at the hardware store. A friend of his, who we would sometimes visit, had one arm and a crooked eye because as teenagers they were playing with dynamite while they were drunk. (My mom was born when my grandma was sixteen, which pretty much describes life in the small towns of the American West back then.)

We made a lot of rockets too, and not the estes educational kind. Most of them didn't have parachutes. One of them came down and hit the windshield of our neighbor's car as he was driving. It didn't break anything, but he was pissed, and turned tires screeching onto our driveway. We all pretended we didn't know what he was talking about. A fifteen year old girl, who all us twelve year olds worshipped because she was so cool, looked at our neighbor and rolled her eyes like she thought he was crazy, and we all started snickering.

He got control of his anger and said he was going to tell our parents, but he never did.

The dumbest thing me and my brother ever did was blow up a 5 gallon glass water bottle. We explained our injuries to my mom by telling her we'd slid down a hill through the brush. I guess it sounded likely to her because she was always pulling ticks out of us.

That I wasn't killed or maimed as a kid was dumb luck. I thought it was because I was smart until one night as a young man I was walking home from a party alone and very, very drunk and I fell off a cliff into the Pacific Ocean. There was an eight foot surf smashing into the base of the cliff, and for a few minutes I thought I'd die for sure.

I keep much closer watch of my own kids than my own parents kept of me. Hopefully, by the time they move away to college they will have some good common sense. I sure as hell didn't.

he was really careless and left them where anybody could find them, loaded. 44 magnum, 45 colt, nazi lugers, etc. man if he'd ever found out.

kids are tough though, and especially boys, when no one's looking, they do some dangerous shit.
