What Song Would You Like Played at Your Funeral?
This came up in a conversation with several friends a while ago, and I just thought I'd post it here.

Personally, being a geek, I'd love "Into the West" from Return of the King, any variation of Aeris' Theme from Final Fantasy VII.

98. I Love That
I heard it playing that the Bellagio at the dancing fountains and it became a personal quest of mine to discover the name of it, who sang it, et cetera. It took me four months to find it. (I didn't say I was much of a detective).

30. Oh god I would love to hear him at a place like the Orpheum.
I went to one of his concerts at Tanglewood. Phoebe Snow was supposed to open, but she was pregnant and the baby picked that evening to make a grand entrance into the world, so the record company sent Emmylou Harris.

Let me tell you -- it was NOT an unpleasant evening of music.

97. wb sniffa! great song choice btw.
(Jim Jim) Jim I did everything I could do but your fever just wouldn't die down
So I tied your horse to the wagon and last night I brought you to town
When I got you there Jim you's gone and there was nothin' nobody could do
So I bought you a suit and a tie Jim and today I wore one too
Jim I wore a tie today the first one that I ever wore
And you'd've said that I looked like a dummy out of a dry goods store
Jim they said a lot of things but I couldn't tell you one thing they said
Somehow my mind kept wanderin'
Wanderin' down back that trail back to the times that we've had
One thing bout you old friend is side by side sun or rain
How many times pannin' gold on the cuff
We did about everything in the book I guess
And prob'ly some things that they never read or thought up
Well Jim you're ridin' on ahead and I I guess that's the way that's gotta be
But Jim when you reach them streets paved with gold nobody stake a claim out for me
(Jim hmm Jim) Jim I wore a tie today

9. a song for my beloved and a song for my sisters, from me to them
Edited on Thu May-26-05 08:24 PM by bertha katzenengel
For Mrs. V.: "I Know How the River Feels"*

For my sisters: "Wind Beneath My Wings"

* lyrics:

V1
They say for everyone, there’s that certain one
Out there, somewhere
I’d been looking hard, searching every heart
Getting nowhere
Didn’t know I was making my way to you

V2
Miles of loneliness, now make perfect sense
Here beside you
Tears like water fall, it was worth it all
Just to find you
And yours are the last arms I’ll run to

CHORUS
Now I know how the river feels
When it reaches the sea
And finally finds the place
It was always meant to be
Holding fast, home at last
Knowing the journey’s through
Lying here with you
I know how the river feels

82. Especially when God is going to visit...
An elderly resident of an Appalachian trailer park wakes up one morning with a vision that God will visit the park later that evening and grant all the tenants a wish. The love-hate relationship this memorable group of wonderful characters have with their impoverished existence surfaces, in funny, often bittersweet ways, as the effects of floods, unemployment and family strife trigger fantasies of love, wealth, elaborate song and dance numbers and dreams of what's yet to be. Does God make it to the trailer park? Well, one thing's for sure, Life will never be the same in Paradise Park.

21. Danny Boy
A tenor sang it at my dad's funeral,I'd kinda like it at mine.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me

29. Swede, what an affecting post. Thank you.
The song is beautiful -- one of the truly splendid melodies of all time.

As a much younger person, I was playing Joan Baez's DIAMONDS AND RUST album, which features a recording of "Danny Boy" and my grandfather, who never seemed to praise things very much, stopped in his tracks and listened to her sing on my stereo.

"Who is that woman singing?" he asked me. I told him. He thought for a long time and then said, "That's the most perfect version of that song I've ever heard."

Anyway, I think he hadn't heard it in decades, and then suddenly there itg was coming out of my bedroom door, and it just hit him like a ton of bricks.

I sure do like your choice, Swede. Yes.

28. "At Your Funeral" by Saves The Day
This song will become
the anthem of
your underground

You're two floors down
getting high in the back room

If I flooded out your house
do you think you'd make it out
or would you give up before the water filled your lungs?

And at your funeral
I will sing the requiem

This song will become
the anthem of
your underground

You're two floors down
getting high in the back room

If I flooded out your house
do you think you'd make it out
or would you give up before the water filled your lungs?

And at your funeral
I will sing the requiem

I'd offer you my hand
it would hurt to much to watch you die

And you can bet
when we mourn the death of you that night
(of you that night)

They'll lay me on the dinner table
I will be the pig
with the apple in my mouth
the food that celebrates your end

And at your funeral
I will sing the requiem
I'd offer you my hand
it would hurt to much to watch you die

And at your funeral
I will sing the requiem
I'd offer you my hand
it would hurt to much to watch you die

44. They did a survey on this subject
in England, and the song most popular for the funeral was "Angels" by Robbie Williams. Way behind was "Amazing Grace."

I always thought that Amazing Grace would be right for me, but after hearing "Angels" I changed my mind. It's a beautiful song.

And the strain I am under
Be a world child form a circle before we all go under
And fade out again and fade out again

Cracked eggs dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death can see it’s beady eyes
All these things into frution
All these things we’ll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out again.

72. When I'm Gone by Phil Ochs
I don't know that it should be played at my funeral, but it is a hauntingly beautiful song.

There's no place in this world where I'll belong when I'm gone
And I won't know the right from the wrong when I'm gone
And you won't find me singin' on this song when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't feel the flowing of the time when I'm gone
All the pleasures of love will not be mine when I'm gone
My pen won't pour out a lyric line when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't breathe the bracing air when I'm gone
And I can't even worry 'bout my cares when I'm gone
Won't be asked to do my share when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't be running from the rain when I'm gone
And I can't even suffer from the pain when I'm gone
Can't say who's to praise and who's to blame when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

Won't see the golden of the sun when I'm gone
And the evenings and the mornings will be one when I'm gone
Can't be singing louder than the guns when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

All my days won't be dances of delight when I'm gone
And the sands will be shifting from my sight when I'm gone
Can't add my name into the fight while I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't be laughing at the lies when I'm gone
And I can't question how or when or why when I'm gone
Can't live proud enough to die when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

86. AlphaVille..."Forever Young"...Forever young, oh I want to be forever
young.

FOREVER YOUNG
lyrics: Gold
music: Gold-Lloyd-Mertens

Let's dance in style, lets dance for a while
Heaven can wait we're only watching the skies
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
Are you going to drop the bomb or not?
Let us die young or let us live forever
We don't have the power but we never say never
Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip
The music's for the sad men
Can you imagine when this race is won
Turn our golden faces into the sun
Praising our leaders we're getting in tune
The music's played by the madmen
Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever

Some are like water, some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later they all will be gone
Why don't they stay young
It's so hard to get old without a cause
I don't want to perish like a fading horse
Youth is like diamonds in the sun
And diamonds are forever
So many adventures couldn't happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams are swinging out of the blue
We let them come true

Look at the coffin, with golden handles
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody-well die

Look at the flowers, all bloody withered
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody-well die

Look at the mourners, bloody-great hypocrites
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody-well die

Look at the preacher, a bloody-nice fellow
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you'll bloody-well die

Look at the widow, bloody-great female
Isn't it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let's not have a sniffle, let's have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live

if you're thinking of the "Over the Rainbow/What a wonderful world" medely, sung in a high tenor with just a ukelele, then that's Izzy (the original was Louis Armstrong).

If you're thinking "What a beautiful world this would be, what a glorious time to be free", then it's Donald Fagen

I know next to nothing about music, but Izzy and Steely Dan are two of my favorites...

116. Pearl Jam's "Light Years"
I’ve used hammers made out of wood.
I have played games with pieces and rules.
I undeciphered tricks at the bar, but now you’re gone.
I haven’t figured out why.
I’ve come up with riddles and jokes about war.
I figured out numbers and what they’re for.
I’ve understood feelings and I’ve understood words but how could you be taken away?

And wherever you’ve gone and wherever we might go.
It don’t seem fair. today just disappeared.
Your light reflected now. reflected from afar.
We were but stones. your light made of stars.

With heavy breath awakened regrets.
Back pages and days that could have been spent together but we were miles apart.
Every inch between us becomes light years now.
No time to be void or save up on life.
Oh, you got to spend it all.

And wherever you’ve gone and wherever we might go.
It don’t seem fair. you seam to like it here.
Your light reflected now. reflected from afar.
We were but stones. your light made of stars.

And wherever you’ve gone and wherever we might go.
It don’t seem fair. today just disappeared.
Your lights reflected now. reflected from afar.
We were but stones. your light made of stars.

123. "Heading for the Light" by the Traveling Wilburys.
Among other songs.

Song: Heading For The Light
Written by: Traveling Wilburys

I've wandered around with nothing more than time on my hands
I was lost in the night with no sight of you
And at times it was so blue and lonely
Heading for the light

Been close to the edge, hanging by my fingernails
I've rolled and I've tumbled through the roses and the thorns
And I couldn't see the sign that warned me, I'm
Heading for the light

(Bridge 1)
Ooh - I didn't see that big black cloud hanging over me
And when the rain came down I was nearly drowned
I didn't know the mess I was in

126. Loads of them
I want a long long long ceremony, ideally full-blown Latin Mass with hoards of Priests in black and ethereal chants gently floating over the congregation, the air so thick with incense that nobody can really see anything. No damn eulogy by the way, complete waste of time.

Then the burial service at the graveside, and as soon as the formal liturgy is over "He is an Englishman" from H.M.S. Pinafore - followed by a bloody good piss-up at the wake.

Throw in Mozart's Requiem (I don't care that he didn't write the last 15 minutes), and this would be perfect. Well almost perfect. I don't like that I'm lying in a box in center aisle, but the rest is great.

Give my empty shell to science, or if i'm not interesting enough for that, burn me, and dump my ashes into the sandtrap on the 8th hole of my golf course. (I've been in that bunker so much when i'm alive, i'm might as well spend eternity there.)

No ceremonies, no expenses. Nothing. Just dump me. It's just a carcass at that point.

Edited on Fri May-27-05 08:19 AM by Richardo
...as heard at the end of "O Brother Where Art Thou"

The latest sun is sinking fast, my race is nearly run
My strongest trials now are past, my triumph is begun
O come Angel Band, come & around me stand
O bear me away on your snowy wings to my immortal home
O bear me away on your snowy wings to my immortal home

I know I'm near the holy ranks of friends & kindred dear
I've brushed the dew on Jordan's banks, the crossing must be near
I've almost gained my Heavenly home, my spirit loudly sings
The Holy ones, behold they come, I hear the noise of wings
O bear my longing heart to Him who bled & died for me
Whose blood now cleanses from all sin & gives me victory

O come Angel Band, come & around me stand
O bear me away on your snowy wings to my immortal home
O bear me away on your snowy wings to my immortal home

149. Landlocked Blues
Landlocked Blues by Bright Eyes

If you walk away, I’ll walk away
First tell me which road you will take
I don’t want to risk our paths crossing some day
So you walk that way, I’ll walk this way

And the future hangs over our heads
And it moves with each current event
Until it falls all around like a cold steady rain
Just stay in when it’s looking this way

And the moon’s laying low in the sky
Forcing everything metal to shine
And the sidewalk holds diamonds like the jewelry store case
They argue walk this way, now walk this way

And Laura’s asleep in my bed
As I’m leaving she wakes up and says
“I dreamed you were carried away on the crest of a wave
Baby don’t go away, come here”

And there’s kids playing guns in the street
And ones pointing his tree branch at me
So I put my hands up I say “enough is enough,
If you walk away, I’ll walk away”

And he shot me dead

I found a liquid cure
From my landlocked blues
It’ll pass away like a slow parade
It’s leaving but I don’t know how soon

And the world’s got me dizzy again
You think after XX years I’d be used to the spin
And it only feels worse when I stay in one place
So I’m always pacing around or walking away

I keep drinking the ink from my pen
And I’m balancing history books up on my head
But it all boils down to one quotable phrase
If you love something, give it away

A good woman will pick you apart
A box full of suggestions for your possible heart
But you may be offended and you may be afraid
But don’t walk away, don’t walk away

We made love on the living room floor
With the noise in background of a televised war
And in the deafening pleasure I thought I heard someone say
“If we walk away, they’ll walk away”

But greed is a bottomless pit
And our freedom’s a joke We’re just taking a piss
And the whole world must watch the sad comic display
If you’re still free start running away
Cause we’re coming for you!

I’ve grown tired of holding this post
I feel more like a stranger each time I come home
So I’m making a deal with the devils of fame
Saying “let me walk away, please”

You’ll be free child once you have died
From the shackles of language and immeasurable time
And then we can trade places, play musical graves
Till then walk away, walk away

So I’m up at dawn
Putting on my shoes
I just want to make a clean escape
I’m leaving but I don’t know where to
I know I’m leaving but I don’t know where to

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Make me, oh make me, Lord more than I am
Make me a piece in your master game plan
Free from the earthly tempestion below
I’ve got the will, Lord if you’ve got the toe.

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Take all the brothers who’ve gone on before
And all of the sisters who’ve knocked on your door
All the departed dear loved ones of mine
Stick’em up front in the offensive line.

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Yeah, Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

152. To Be Over by Yes
No weeping and wailing, just a memorial after my ashes are scattered, then a party. This lyric always seemed very Tao/Zen to me.

We go sailing down the calming streams
Drifting endlessly by the bridge
To be over
We will see
To be over
Do not suffer through the game of chance that: plays
Always doors to lock away your dreams
Think it over
Time will heal your fear
Think it over
Balance the thoughts that release within you
Childlike soul dreamer one journey
One to seek and see in every light do open
True pathways away
Carrying closer go gently
Holding doors will open everyway
You wander true pathways away
After all your soul will still surrender
After all don't doubt your part
Be ready to be loved

I came up with for my mom. She asked me to plan the music for her service.

Imagine - John Lennon
Amazing Grace - Faith Hill
Time After Time - Cindy Lauper (this is "our" song)
You can't Always get what you want/I shall be released - Bette Midler
Black Muddy River - Grateful Dead
What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

159. "Monkeyland" by the Chameleons
I shake my head and shiver
They smile
And then stab my back as they shake my hand
Send out an SOS plea
Come quickly
I'm marooned in monkeyland.
Is there anyone there
Who understands me
Anyone at all

I'm idly staring at the sky
Did anybody hear me sigh
A million stars are a moving sight
To all you out there
Reading this tonight
It's just a trick of the light

I have to know what is real
And what is illusion
Tell me how does it feel
Beyond this confusion
Is there anyone there

Do I dismiss this with a sigh
Suppose I must from time to time
And let the answers pass me by
To questions set to bend the mind
Is my creator a God or a man
Does someone somewhere
Care or understand
It's just a trick of the light

I have to know what is real
And what is illusion
Tell me how does it feel
Beyond this confusion
Is there anyone there

Life's an optical illusion
Like other optical illusions
Beware
If there's anyone there

161. Fly To The Angels ~ Slaughter
Pictures of you
Ohh they're still on my mind
You had this smile
That could light up the world
Now when it rains it seems
The sun never shines

And I drive
Down this lonely, lonely road
Oooh I got this feelin'
Girl I gotta let you go

Cause now you've to fly (fly high)
Fly to the angels
Heaven awaits your heart
And flowers bloom in your name
Woahh ohh
You've got to fly (fly high),
Fly to the angels
All the stars in the night
Shine in your name

Though it hurts me way deep inside
When I turn and look and find
That your not there
I try to convince myself
But the pain,
The pain is still not gone

Still I drive
Down this lonely, lonely road
Oooh I got this feelin,
Girl I've got to let you go

But now you've got to fly (fly high)
Fly to the angels
Heaven awaits your heart
And flowers bloom in your name

Whoa
You've got to fly (fly high)
Fly to the angels
All the stars in the night
Shine in your name

Flyyy

And still I drive down
This lonely, lonely road
Oooh I got this feelin
Oh, I can't let you go

But I know
That you've got to fly (fly high)
Fly to the angels
Heaven awaits your heart
And flowers bloom in your name
Whoa oh ohh oh
You've got fly (fly high)
Fly to the angels
All the stars in the sky
Shine in your name,yeah

Ow

oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh

168. "She Goes On" by Crowded House
Or maybe Lullaby Requiem by Neil Finn.

Here are the words to She Goes On, you'll see why I chose it:

"Pretty soon you'll be able to remember her
Lying in the garden singing
Right where she'll always be
The door is always open

This is the place that I loved her
And these are the friends that she had
Long may the mountain ring
To the sound of her laughter

And she goes on and on
In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
'Till we see her once again
In a world without end

We owe it all to Frank Sinatra
The song was playing a she walked into the room
After the long weekend
They were a lifetime together

Appearing in the eyes of children
In the clear blue mountain view
The colouring in the sky
And painting ladders to heaven

And she goes on
In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
'Till we see her once again
In a world without end

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
And I always will remember
In a world without end

She goes on
She goes on
She goes on"

178. "Send Me to Glory in a Glad Bag"
Edited on Fri May-27-05 02:36 PM by ComerPerro
People tell me that I ought to save my money *
So that I could be laid away in style,
In a walnut box with all the fancy trimmin's
Vacuum sealed to keep me fresh a while.

cho. But Send me to Glory in a glad bag.
Don't waste a fancy coffin on my bones.
Just put me out on the curb next Tuesday
Let the city sanitation bear me home.

I don't need a fancy funeral *
Flowers and tears and all that jive
When I'm dead that won't impress me
Just buy me a beer while I'm alive.

There's trouble at the sanitary landfill *
It's filling up with permanent debris,
So make my glad bag out of corn not plastic
So it will decompose along with me.

(chorus)

If I should die upon the eve of Christmas *
Place my glad bag by the Chistmas tree;
And when the children open all their presents,
The big surprise will be the death of me.

Sell all my worldly possessions
And buy yourself a case or two of Pabst.
Let the empties be my memorial tombstone.
Engrave them with this epitath:

(chorus)

My wife and I went out to buy some glad bags *
Sh winked as we were driving back;
She said that paradise awaits me
As soon as she gets me in the sack.

Now it may be that I am not bound for Glory, *
But to another place I would not choose;
So if it seems that I'm headed that direction,
An oven bag would be the thing to use.

Swing low, sweet sanitation vehicle
or (sweet vehicle)
Comin' for to carry me home

185. Box of Rain
Look out of any window
any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
birds are winging or
rain is falling from a heavy sky -
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
this is all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago

Walk out of any doorway
feel your way, feel your way
like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction
around some corner
where it's been waiting to meet you -
What do you want me to do,
to watch for you while you're sleeping?
Well please don't be surprised
when you find me dreaming too

Look into any eyes
you find by you, you can see
clear through to another day
I know it's been seen before
through other eyes on other days
while going home --
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago

Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
with words half spoken
and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through
A box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through

Just a box of rain -
wind and water -
Believe it if you need it,
if you don't just pass it on
Sun and shower -
Wind and rain -
in and out the window
like a moth before a flame

It's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare
But it's just a box of rain
or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there

190. Monty Python, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"
Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...

196. As of right now,
any song from the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. Preferrably "Disco Inferno"(by The Trammps), or "You Should Be Dancing"(by The Bee Gees), or any other by the Bee Gees.

197. "Teardrop" by Massive Attack.
It would be "No Surprises" by Radiohead, but I don't want to be too depressing.

202. "Lightning Crashes" by Live
lightning crashes, a new mother cries
her placenta falls to the floor
the angel opens her eyes
the confusion sets in
before the doctor can even close the door
.
lightning crashes, an old mother dies
her intentions fall to the floor
the angel closes her eyes
the confusion that was hers
belongs now to the baby down the hall
.
oh now feel it comin' back again
like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
I can feel it.
.
lightning crashes, a new mother cries
this moment she's been waiting for
the angel opens her eyes
pale blue colored iris,
presents the circle
and puts the glory out to hide, hide...

My friends will know what I mean.

Tucker
