Poll question: Veterans and armed forces... roll call!
Inspired by maxrandb's thread in GD, a by-the-numbers roll-call and salute to those who served and those who still do...

...in poll form, 'cause that's all I know. :)

Check yourself in, folks.

12. BikeWriter, you remember those "American Advisors" who
the newspaper articles used to mention?

Do we--I mean, do they count? I'll defer to your opinion, because I've never been sure about this aspect of it.

You should go here sometime http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=3207115 and listen to the audio file. I know you'll appreciate the story. It has a very personal connection for me.

LeMay was a lunatic.

24. I clicked on "not I, but thank you"
I enlisted in the Army Reserves coming out of college. I felt a strong desire to serve, but entered though the DEP. I showed up for my reserve unit musters, but when Bush was elected in 2000, I had this horrible suspicion that I would be sent to an unjust war by the new commander-in-chief, and took an entry level separation (I hadn't attended boot yet and was just hanging out and showing the office people how to use the computers).

I admire all those of you who stuck it out and served your time. Half of me wished I wasn't a limp-dick (sorry for the language, but that's what they call it). But after seeing that my would-be unit has deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, I have come to terms with the choice I made.

I am the first generation in my family in America not to serve, and it troubles me to this day, but knowing how the CIC has used the military, I would do the same thing again.

USS Worden (CG-18) Pearl Harbor 1985-1988, WESTPAC cruise 1987. Escorted Kuwaiti oil tankers through the straights of Hormuz that summer right after the USS Stark was hit. (RIP shipmates)

SIMA S.F. (Alameda NAS) 1988-1990, Was on base during the Prieta Loma earthquake Sept 17, 1989. My roommate was at the Stick for game three of the world series and had to hitchhike all the way home! Our Seabees did an outstanding job trying to get survivors out of the Cypress structure in Oakland.

:toast: to all veterans and their families.

Let's bring the troops back home!

Proud to be a USAF vet, 77 to 81. Bench stock delivery at Hurlburt Field, FL, then base retail store at Davis-Monthan AFB, in beautiful Tucson, where my oldest two sons were born. Other than that, no great stories to tell. ;)
