is there a Dem equivalent of "GOP"?

seems like every time I read a news story about Repubes, especially when it's about Congress, they always use GOP to refer to them, and then use Democrats to refer to the Dems...

WTF is up with that?

2. GOP
refers to a nickname for the Republicans-Grand Old Party, which is ironic since its only been around since 1854, and the Democrats were there with Thomas Jefferson. Anyway, Republicans got this moniker after the Civil War, when they basically ran things (and these are the bad old days Bush wants to bring back). This was an ironic title, and a take-off on the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veteran's group that had a certain amount of political sway back then.

11. It's still easier to type than "Republican".
That's why I use "GOP" a fair share.

16. It's very handy in Minnesota, because the offiicial name of the
Democratic party here is Democratic-Farmer-Labor party, based on the fact that the Democrats and the Farmer-Labor party merged in the 1940s.

So the media here refer to the parties as the GOP and the DFL. When I lived outside Minnesota for the first time, I was surprised to find that no one knew what "DFL" meant.
