My partner and I just signed our wills, living wills, and powers of attorney. Took us a while to come to terms with it all, but we're glad we did. Now, if one of us is ever incapacitated, the other will be in charge of all decisions regarding medical care. Both of us checked off what Liza called the "don't make me Terri Schiavo" option, where you say that you don't want artificial nutrtition/hydration if recovery is impossible and life is unnecessarily burdensome. We are confident that the powers of attorney will give each of us the necessary discretion to decide to prolong treatment if we think it's appropriate in the situation, even if the hospital wants to pull the plug and save money (another thing to consider when you set this all up).
If you're in a relationship that's not legally recognized, I urge to go get this done. It is kind of unpleasant contemplating these scenarios, but for us anyway it reminded us how lucky we are that we trust each other with our lives. And it does give me peace of mind to know that Tom DeLay will not be able to fuck with us on our deathbeds.
C ya,
