I am getting so depressed
Edited on Tue May-24-05 04:06 PM by ashling
I am thinking about applying for a job at the new Super Wallmart here. So there are no benefits ... nothing out here has any benefits. And they pay 1.10 more to start than I am making now.

Believe me, this is not something that I am considering lightly, so please, no flames or overtly cynical responses. I think that might put me over the edge right about now.

Maybe I'll just call it falmes from now on.

Don't worry, things really will be fine. You'll be making more money, it'll work out.

2. If you don't have a choice then take it
It's the bird in the hand. No matter how horrible the company is, it is better than nothing.

3. Do it
Principles are wonderful things, but they don't put food on the table.

Do what you have to do, and then come here and tell us everything about WalMart. But don't tell them you're telling us.

OK?

You'll be our WM mole .....................

14. They give a 10 percent discount
But if they catch you buying for people outside your household, they can and will fire you.

5. I'm really sorry
It pisses me off no end that these are the kinds of decisions we are left to make.

Hopefully, you can use SW as a waystation to a better deal. Keep yourself in one piece until then. Hang in there.

7. Do it.
I detest Walmart on so many different levels, but....

You have to do what is right for you. That 1.10 might actually make a difference for you. And that's what matters.

(We'll bring the Great Walmart Satan to it's knees a little bit later, ashling, but right now do what is best for you.)

Khash.

9. Do you have a hospital in the area that's hiring?
Might be worth considering. Lots of desk jobs that have little to do with direct patient contact. Give it a try.

That's my private joke - if I ever moved to Las Vegas, it probably wouldn't be that hard to get a job if I made a beeline for one of the local hospitals. With all the admits from excessive drinking, STDs, stunt accidents, and occasional animal maulings, I'll have plenty of job security. (Not trying to sound flippant; it's just the nature of the business over there.)

15. Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do
During the Reagan recession, I worked for three sleazy temp agencies at once and still barely made enough to live on. Most of the jobs were boring, unpleasant, and carried out in a harsh, scolding atmosphere. One employer accidentally let it slip that they were paying the agency $9 an hour for my time, of which I was getting only $4. No benefits, of course.

The only time I turned one down was when an agency asked me to give out free samples of cigarettes at a trade show.

I was trending left as I came out of grad school, but my three years of experience with the dregs of the business world turned me pink.
