7. Both
To have an unspoiled view and some privacy,no noisy or nosy neighbors.
I live in a house now and its pretty quiet but one neighbor from hell can change all that (knocks on wood)

2. Sailboat. I'm planning on buying one in one year.
Homes are too expensive here in San Diego. I can rent a slip in decent harbor area for $400.00 a month and pay for the 40' sailboat cash.

3. City or country. Anyplace but suburbia.
Suburbia is hell on earth.

8. Lived in the city, bought rural house w/land, then last year...
...bought more adjoining land, and now looking at buying even more land.

I farm it. There is something awesome in sitting with a beer at the end of the day and watching the sun set as the deer come out and the birds sing.

City folks pay good money to do that at country B&Bs.

The only drawback is that is it more work. You can never completely tame and control acreage like you can a quarter-acre lot. Never.

14. Well, really my ideal is a small house in a small city
Edited on Tue May-24-05 03:54 PM by gollygee
a reasonably small house anyway. I have a small family and don't like paying to heat space I won't use :)

But yeah I meant "small city"

10. Be sure to consider Peak Oil considerations:
1) Is Peak Oil going to occur while you are living there? (A number of informed(?) sources predict peak production will arrive before 2010).
2) Will 1) reasonably cause the value of the house to drop substantially? (Location, location, location)
3) Will the location cause you more or less day-to-day travel time?
4) Will your choice be a good one for reducing heating(especially)/cooling costs?

I'm sure others can add to the list...
