phonetics vs. sight-reading argument, huh? (My mom is a retired first-grade teacher and a _huge_ believer in kids learning to "sound it out." That's how I learned to read, too, of course.)

5. Explains much to me. As a sight reader, I am a terrible speller.

Know the letters in a word, just never noticed the order they come in.

When I was learning to read, there was a huge battle raging locally about phonetics. Half those concerned insisted it was the ONLY way to teach and the other half railed that it was a "Commie plot!". Really, they played the pinko card. So basically, districts and teachers just told us what words meant and hoped for the best as they stayed out of the fight.
