Enough! Tell me what gives you HOPE.
(Words of warning: stay out of GD or GD Politics - you'd think the end of the world came tonight.)

There is so much good in this world, and I think we need to remind ourselves of the things which give us hope.

For me, it's love, friendship, relationships with wonderful people, my faith (obviously), and DU.

So, what is it that gives you hope?

24. what a great question! thank you!
well, it's a personal question, so: i've got hope because against all odds i found a wonderful woman who loves me and thinks i'm funny. if that can happen, anything can happen! :)
despite the horror show that is most of the political situation, there's always hope. barack obama is in the senate, you're kidding me!? nancy pelosi?! wow~
i sure wish things were better off but here we are. besides, we can always laugh at how stupid & silly the opposition is. rush 'boils on the ass' limbaugh failing in his third marraige. bush, unable to ride a segway or mountain bike safely (let alone the pretzil episode) the current age is perfect for john stewart & the daily show to tee off on every day! years from now, to see this age in the proper perspective, it'll be the daily show.
i love michael moore's work. and i'm dying to see 'gunner's palace,' seeing as how it strikes close to home (our unit lives in a bunch of saddam's old villas, and we drive our combat patrols under the same kind of conditions...)
i think the darkness of the world will be lifted soon, the dumb-o rays will let up and people will be able to think for themselves again. why? must be from reading doris lessing's 'shikasta.'
in the immortal words of jesse jackson, keep hope alive!

25. Wonderful question.
Oh so fitting for me today.

DU makes me realize I'm not the only one pissed off and frustrated with the state our country is in. It gives me hope in knowing that soon we'll be able to move on from this mess and get someone who will be able to restore our faith in not only the government, but in people as well.

PEOPLE give me hope for different reasons. My grandparents give me hope because even after many years of hard times and struggles, they still have admiration for one another. My Nana is such a beautiful and loving woman. My aunt gives me hope because of her strong politics and her genuine heart. And even though she's not married and has no kids, she's content with life. My sisters give me hope because of their youth and inexperience. I look at them and want to keep them that way forever. My friend Mike gives me hope because he makes me believe there really ARE guys in the world that know how to treat women. He's amazing and I'm so fortunate to have him in my life.

Even through all the hard times, I'm so blessed to have people in my life that love and care for me. They are the reason I'm able to love, laugh, and enjoy the small things that are forever in my mind. That's what hope is all about.

Edited on Tue May-24-05 08:19 AM by dxstone
Nah, just kiddin'... what is this "hope" you speak of?
Nah, just goofin' again!
I don't know that I have any hope for the future anymore; if things turn around, I will be very very surprised...
But there are good things in any day, even the worst ones... the deepest suffering teaches a soul that there is great worth all around us in every moment; the greatest lack, borne long enough, shows you that life itself is never really lacking; it's only our ability to apprehend the wonder of it that flags at times, in rythms that are themselves natural and necessary...
Ironic as all get-out; the closer to death you get, the more beautiful and precious life appears, even in its most minute details and transient fleeting moments...
Proving, I think, that where there's life, there's ALWAYS hope...
To the VERY last breath.

I FEAR when I forget what I KNOW.
I KNOW that life is a majestic wonder, an amazing gift, an awe-inspiring drama, a long, strange trip, an incredible mystery, an endless riddle... and that's ALL I know, but it's enough.
And I HOPE, my sweet and brave DUers all, that today serves each one of you up a nice tasty slice!

Zappa was right, but he was also totally wrong: Yes, indeed, there is NO HOPE.
But I don't care how hopeless things are; FUCK that, life is for LIVING!
Skol!
:toast:

33. The pendulum
When the pundulum swings to its most extreme we should all smile with the knowledge that it will be swinging in the other direction soon.

For the moment, we can do little more than wait until the pendulum is back on our side. When it does arrive again (and it will happen) our work begins. We need to keep the pendulum from swinging too far in the extreme of our own side.

Whenever things look very bleak, I consider the pendulum and think of my children and smile.

34. The love of a sweet-faced little kitty,
A light rain at dawn and a big mug of coffee,
The faces of my oldest and dearest friends,
Brilliant red sunsets,
The lush green of the local forests,
The spectre of Rainier,
The rumbling, sleep-infused, early morning voice of the man I love,
Pizza,
The poetry of William Butler Yeats,
The aria from Turandot,
The hush after new fallen snow,
The sound of a 2-year-old, laughing,
The look, the smell, the weight and feel of a new book,
The character, the scent, the feel of an old book,
Motown.

I could go on, but I have to get to a meeting soon. Maybe I'll stop back later.

35. LOVE.
Love is what gives me hope. I hate to quote the bible around here, but Paul did actually hit the nail on the head once. That this comes from the bible should not diminish its meaning:

If I could speak in any language in heaven or on earth but didn't love others, I would only be making meaningless noise . . . And if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make it move, without love I would be no good to anybody. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn't love others, I would be of no value whatsoever.

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. . . . .

There are three things that will endure--faith, hope, and love--and the greatest of these is love.

44. Honestly?
I saw a little baby bunny today. Absolutely tiny, you could hold it in the palm of your hand. And it ran up to me and stopped and looked at me and decided I wasn't gonna kill it, eat it, hurt it. Maybe it was too dumb for belief but it extended a sort of trust. If that's possible between species it should always be possible. And that possibility is where hope lies.

And I thought to myself, what a wonderful world.
