Poll question: R.E.M.?
The band, not the sleep stage. Yes or no. Why?

1. Oh, hell yes.
Good liberals. Good music. Outspoken.

What's not to love?

3. They're good and all, BUT...
I've never been able to listen to a whole album of theirs. I love love loooooove their singles, they're infectious and I can't get them out of my head, but I get bored with the rest of their songs.

That being said, it's rare to see such a big popular band with an out and proud gay man as the lead singer, let alone be as politically active for liberal causes as REM...so...I guess they're alright. :)

5. Love them or hate them
(and I love them)

...it's hard to deny they're one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Everything from Nirvana and out has their roots in R.E.M. I actually used to play a game with a friend who had a Stipe-esque voice, we'd pick any song and play it to see if it could've been an R.E.M. song, if played their way.

Speaking of Nirvana, "Nevermind" is an entire album that works in the game. :)

10. r.e.m. is fantastic. I'm from Athens, GA. I've met these guys.
Mr. CottonBear's band opened for r.e.m. in the late 70s and in the 80's. They all played during the great time of incredible Athens music that put us on the map. BTW, Mr. CottonBear is still rocking!

They support local, state and national Dems. They play for free for political events. They support historic preservation and other local causes.

Bill Berry played at the Tourettes Synndrome benefit at the Morton Theater in Athens (so did my hubby). It was his first show after leaving r.e.m. He gave a drum set to auction! My friend Rick Fowler (amazing guitarist and songwriter and author ("The Unwelcome Companion" about Tourettes) organized the event.

These guys are great. Bill Berry owns a farm nearby where I keep my horse and right next door to where I buy hay from the next door farmer!

I saw Michael Stipe introduce Al Gore at UGA during the elction back in 1999.
They played "I Am Superman"!

Mike Mills is very cool. Michael is a great artist. Bill is a mellow gentleman farmer. Pete lives out of state now. We don't see too much of him lately.

16. Thanks for the low-down
As for the apostrophe problem, my favorite repeated sentence in Ulysses is "Excuse bad writing."

17. Great music, obscure lyrics...
...at least on the first few albums.

Comedian Sean Cullen (the "food of your choice" guy) was just on a MAD TV repeat the other day, doig a dead-on Michael Stipe impression in ront of an acoustic combo--a song called "REMember," I believe. REM were great, but they deserve such elegant skewering.
