Will DU be here in a hundred years?
A hundred years from now, will our threads still exist, archived somewhere perhaps, for our great-grandchildren to read?

Will we be immortal?!

21. We are but noise in the grand scheme of digital traffic.
Now had your question been, do I believe there will be records that once upon a time, one hundred years ago when the internet was but a child, using primitive communications protocols, there existed a site called the democratic underground ? That i would say is possible. Not probable, but possible.

Ask yourself this.. what detailed messages do you know about relative to telegraph traffic from the late 1800's. My guess is none.. buy you know the telegraph existed.

Same song.. different verse.

Also unlikely that there will be many places with electric power.

Those are, I admit, big assumptions...

...of the Second Dark Ages may be looking at it...and probably complaining about the complex, ancient language and terms, and having difficulty with translations and references. "What IS this ASSHAT? And DOOFUS? I cannot find these words anywhere!!!"

10. It's A Nice Thought...
... but I can't even imagine our COUNTRY being here in another one hundred years. Not as we know it now anyway.

But, I think it's possible that we'll be archived somewhere.

HELLO EVERYONE IN 2105!!
How's the weather? WARM?

So obvious it's genius and no one else has asked it, you know?

If I had to guess...I'd say no. But that would be amazing if it was the case.

I sure hope so. :)

22. I think so. Or should I say, I hope so.....
...I don't really look at the World as U.S. or Britain, or France, or whatever. I try to think of the Human Race. If we don't blow everyone else to hell, then I think the human race may be able to go forward.

I try to look at it this way: if a flag is planted on the moon Titan, then two thousand years from now, the human race isn't going to be concerned about whether or not the U.S. of A did it or not. Because by then, this country will probably be another footnote in history, or like the Assyrians, just another imperial country that came and went. The human race is going to be talking about the fact that we, on earth, did it. Therefore, I don't really care what country or nation-state pushes us forward. I just hope that someone does....

This nation/state stuff is temporal. The survival of our species is whats important. And whomever wants to push that forward, then I'm all for it.

Anybody remember these:

35. wow!
I just threw away a bunch of those that I found in my own personal archives. My SO said we should keep them because they could be considered antiques pretty soon and people will want to collect them as such. I said if you wanna keep 'em, go ahead, but if not, I'm gonna trash 'em.

31. I can assure you it still exists in 2105
In fact I have just been sent back from that period with a time machine. It was my mission to prevent the U.S. supreme court from making a terrible mistake in November 2000, a mistake that will eventually kill 95% of the world's population.
Because of a problem with the flux capacitor I was accidentally sent to may 20th, 2005 instead.
I am now posting this message here be for my boss to read a hundred years from now so he can come pick me up and send me to the proper time.

PLEASE COME PICK ME UP!

34. Where does DU stand in terms of
not only how many members it has, but how many people know of its existence? If we have close to 70,000 members, then we can assume everyone in those member's families know about DU. Plenty of RWers and their families know about DU. And plenty of LWers and their families know about DU, even if they are not members.

So my point is, how much of a household name is DU? The more people who know of its existence, the more likely that in 100 years people will still know that it once existed, and the probability of it STILL existing at that time will go up too.

Am I making any sense here?
