Hemingway. Great writer? Or he sucks?
I think he sucks. I've read a few of his collections of short stories. But he still sucks.

What d-u U think?

2. I enjoyed some of it.
"A Moveable Feast" definitely. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" as well. In my dismal categorized world, he's a curious quasi-modern American figure.

He moved things along smartly. Not a favorite, but I have an appreciation, misguided though it may be.

3. I sort of agree...don't think he sucks, but he is over-rated...and really
wasn't a trail-blazer, either. He essentially copied what Gertrude Stein was already attempting.

4. Wasn't he a spy for the USA?
He was mean to women too. I don't like him that much. He was always trying to up F. Scott Fitzgerald because he was jealous.

6. To Have And Have Not: HATED IT!
A Farewell To Arms: Amazing, moving story, fantabulous writing.

Even Hemingway nodded once in a while. Give him a break.

7. He doesn't suck
His stripped down prose was a welcome change from the pretentious, over-written literature of the time. He is one of the forefathers of the modern novel.

10. Righto
Hemingway probably wouldn't be on my top 10, but applying normal suckability standards, Hemingway doesn't suck.

8. The answer is yes.
The early novels and short stories are very good - but some time after FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS he got so busy being Hemingway - the hunting fishing drinking and such like that his writing became a sick parody of itself. Sad really. Still I will always cherish his comeback to F Scott Fitzgerald (who wrote the one good book) "the rich are different" "Yes they have more money."

11. I don't like his writing, however the man loved cats and had
several ...the descendants of whom live in his home, which is now a museum in Key West.

There are about 65 cats living on the grounds, many of them with extra toes. It is a neat place to visit.

But I still don't like his writing.

12. One of my favorite writers! Don't knock Hemingway.
Edited on Thu May-19-05 07:14 PM by Longgrain
He turned simple speech into poetry, and read the human soul between punctuation marks.

With Hemingway it's not the words themselves, but what's in between the words.

14. Great writer, but better at short stories than novels.
Even so, "Farewell to Arms" and "Sun Also Rises" were VERY important books in the development of the modern in literature.

18. I love his style.
It's so refreshing to read Hemingway after reading overwritten, hoity toity crap. As some have said, his style was also very important to the modern novel.

I do agree with whoever said his short stories were better....though I am a fan of most of his stuff.
