BREAKING: Star Wars is not Shakespeare... news at 11
Edited on Thu May-19-05 12:46 PM by NYCparalegal
C'mon everyone! Star Wars is not Shakespeare. When you go see any one of the SW movies, you will not get beautifully flowing dialogue and great acting.

You go see SW for the action, for the good v. evil battle, for the cool effects, for the whole popcorn experience.

I just wished people and critics lightened up a bit. SW is not and has never been about Oscar winning acting or dialogue...

Ok, off my soapbox.

Edited to add: I know Shakespeare was considered entertainment for the 'ignorant' masses, full of gore, sex, etc. But in the context of my rant, I am POd about people who cannot see SW for what it is: pure entertainment.

2. So...it is Shakespeare...
Shakespeare - though one fo the greatest writers of all time - was all about getting butts in the seats for the playhouse, as well as crowding in the groundlings to watch the plays.

He wrote for entertainment, sordid tales of sex, adventure on the high seas, ghosts, blood and guts and decapitation.

And sometimes, even he had some shitty dialogue.

4. Uhm, not even CLOSE to a valid assessment of Shakespeare.
Shakespeare was THE master because he wrote literature that was both entertaining to the masses while still filled to the hilt with complicated literary devices (ie. symbolism, imagery, foreshadowing, allusion, etc). Further, Shakespeare's writing was ONLY dialog driven, which makes his writing that much more impressive. He didn't need to set the scene or give direction - the work stood on its own and was left up to interpretation, making most of his work absolutely timeless and applicable to ANY society. You could easily write a series of books on why Shakespeare was great (and many already have been written). The same can most certainly NOT be said for Lucas.
