Alright, I'll admit it! I'm a POPINJAY.
Edited on Thu May-19-05 11:55 AM by Sugar Smack
I'm a full-fledged, red-blooded, 100% card-carrying POPINJAY!

You non-popinjays who think our lives are all soft pillows, round edges, champagne and caviar, well, I'm here to clear this thing up once and for all. It's hard work. Hard, hard work. Popinjays never take the path of least resistance. We wind up backpeddaling so much we almost never get anywhere. You wanna see my scars?

Don't even get me started on being the occasional drink-soaked popinjay.

Thanks for listening.

6. We tend to stick together, even though
we're accused of being "vain, talkative people". Since we're vain and talkative, we sometimes wind up not listening to one another.

Here's a link to a dicussion from yesterday that explains it all. What fun!

The word "popinjay" is English colloquial meaning, "vain, talkative person". And honestly, it sounds like an adorable name for a little bird.

12. A vain or conceited person, one given to pretentious displays.
This deeply insulting word is now rather dated or literary. A good example can be found in Joseph Conrad’s short story The End of the Tether of 1902: “When he looked around in the club he saw only a lot of conceited popinjays too selfish to think of making a good woman happy”.

Dictionaries say a popinjay was also at one time the usual name for a parrot, and in that lies the origin of the derogatory term. What could be more gaudily and squawkingly in your face than a parrot? What more perfect term for an empty chatterer, fop or coxcomb? Who’s a pretty boy, then?

Every once in awhile a drink-soaked popinjay. But never a lick spittle one.

20. Well, popinjays are hard to ignore-
Especially if they don't know what they're doing. It helps to be skilled in the art of bluster, a lot of skwawking and feather-fanning. Ravens have it easier, I suspect.

22. Joan_Alpern, bird of a feather!
:hi: :loveya:

No, we're not really. Blustering and swaggering is an innocent pastime of ours, we've honed it to a science, and it's second nature. We popinjays (give or take one or two) are sweet creatures, given the proper habitat.

What's your proper habitat, btw?

You're making this a fun night for me!

My habitat is one with a cat, 3,000 books, love, a small buzz from wherever, and lotsa talk... good music! My cage is clean, and if I have to be a popinjay tonight, well maybe I will!

:woohoo:

PS- do you have as much trouble as I do, catching the "woo-hoo" smilie?

28. I'm looking for a woohoo now
habitat = 3 parrots, 4 golden retrievers, 2 house-mates, 9 full bookcases, 4 TVs - all currently off.

The bi-monthly cage cleaner will appear tomorrow morning.

I frequently a small buzz on things that won't trash your wallet or health (or at least that what several doctors have told me)~ last night I figured out that if you mix Absolut Raspberry Vodka with Coke it taste like an alcoholic Dr. Pepper.

:woohoo::popcorn::beer::woohoo:
