Sparrow

Simon & Garfunkel

Who will love a little Sparrow?
Who's traveled far and cries for rest?
"Not I," said the Oak tree,
"I won't share my branches with no sparrow's nest,
and my blanket of leaves won't warm her cold breast."

Who will love a little Sparrow
And who will speak a kindly word?
"Not I," said the Swan,
"The entire idea is totally absurd,
I'd be laughed at and scorned if the other Swans heard."

Who will take pity in his heart,
And who will feed a starving sparrow?
"Not I," said the Golden Wheat,
I would if I could but I cannot I know.
I need all of my grain to prosper and grow."

Who will love a little Sparrow?
Who will right her eulogy?
"I will," said the Earth,
"For all I've created returns to me,
From dust were ye made and dust ye shall be."

1. Those were the days
"In Washington, the atmosphere was tense today..."

(audible part of the voiceover in "Silent Night/7 O'Clock News")

3. Once upon a time
I saw them play at a high school, somewhere in the suburbs. I wasn't even in high school myself yet! (Precocious little snot I was then.) I don't remember much of what they played, although I'm pretty sure they did my then favorite tune, "For Emily Whenever I May Find Her." I also remember Simon told this long involved story about how he decided to try and rein in his ego by throwing away all his mirrors, which among other things kept him from shaving and made him look like a derelict. And then one day he walked by a very shiny shop window and stopped to dig on his reflected image-- "an intense dig," was how he put it-- and a bird chose that cosmically appropriate moment to shit on his head.

I liked him a lot less post-Garfunkel; I thought the "Rhymin' Simon" era was awful. But I saw him in 2003 and he put on a terrific show, lots of Graceland/Rhythm of the Saints era stuff played by a nine piece band anchored by an African bass player. (As a bass player, I wish I could go to Zaire myself and take lessons.)

:hi:
