Chinese Herb Kudzu Reduces Binge Drinking

By David Liu, Ph.D.
May 17, 2005, 22:52

The Chinese herb kudzu proved effective in helping moderately heavy drinkers reduce alcohol consumption or binge drinking, according to a study reported May 16 in the May issue of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

The study, conducted by Scott E. Lukas and colleagues at Harvard-Affiliated McLean Hospital in Boston, involved 14 men and women in their 20s who regularly consumed three or four drinkers a day.

"We don't know why, but it looks like the kudzu is increasing blood alcohol levels," Dr. Lukas said. "The subjects are getting drunker on less. It is satisfying them so they don't need as many beers."

Dr Lukas said the drop in alcohol consumption could be more drastic if the dose of kudzu increased. For this study, subjects got a relatively low dose.

6. An example of kudzu taking over everything in the summer

Stand still long enough in the South in the summer and it will grow on you too!

9. Wouldn't it be great if they had to ban this plant ?

As a controlled substance. I would be all for that. The idiot we bought our house from actually planted it. Last year I finally killed the last vine in our yard.

2. But will it make them puke any faster?
Back in my "binge drinking" days, that was the only thing that made me realize I'd had enough to drink. :puke:

7. Now That's an Effect
"The study found that those who took kudzu capsules drank an average of 1.8 beers per session compared with 3.5 for those who took a placebo."

Roughly 50%. Of course, maybe it just tastes awful. That would do the trick, too.

If that's the effect, I wonder if kudzu drinks will start to come on the market. That would be interesting.
