Ok Zeppelin fans--do you realize Whole Lotta Love is a rip off?
It is ripped, riff and much of the lyrics and melody, off of Muddy Waters' 1962 single "You Need Love" written by Willie Dixon. No credit or royalties to either Dixon or Muddy Waters either.

Lemon Song is melange of various blues rip-offs, stealing lyrics from Robert Johnson's 1938 "Travelling Riverside Blues"---"you squeeze my lemon till the juice runs down my leg" or the riff from Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" during the fast break.

How Many More Times is another rip off song, with parts ripped from various Blues Artists, including Howlin' Wolf and Albert king

At least when they did "You Shook Me" (Muddy Waters) and "I can't Quit You baby" (Otis Rush) they at least admitted they were doing covers.
Most bands, from The Paul Butterfield Band to the Yardbirds to Cream gave credit to the original artists when they did covers, but Zeppelin ripped songs left and right, including some of their biggest hits, and didn't give the old guys credit.

but these are really blatant. In the case of Whole Lotta Love, Willie Dixon should have been credited and recieved royalties

thanks Richardo

If you like Muddy, get the Chess Records 50th Anniversary collection of his, in 2 volumes---1948-1955, 1956-1964. The song in question is on 1956-1964.

(but I personally like the 1948-55 collection better---it has some of my faves--Trouble No More, Still a Fool, Rollin and Tumblin, Can't Be Satisfied, Baby please Don't Go"

13. I disagree, but I'll qualify that...
At first, yes, they were a run of the mill psych-blues band that was practically strangling on homage (my roommate got that DVD set, and I can not STAND the early blues-and-only-blues stuff on it, it bores me half to tears), but they got out from under it and started incorporating ideas from celtic folk and other world musics that had never been explored in a rock context. And they they left a wake of crushed balls while doing it. I used to hate 'em, as when I was in HS, they were the band of choice of the older brothers of the guys that beat me up, but in later years when I really gave 'em a fair listen, a lot of their ideas impressed the shit out of me. The wizards-and-swords shit I can live without, but they *were* pioneers.

19. I agree
their celtic folk stuff is somewhat innovative.

But stuff like Kashmir is only picking up where George Harrison left off

and in terms of inventing Hard Rock---no, the Kinks and the Stones and the Animals long before Zeppelin (although rumor has it that page played on some of the Kinks stuff as a session man)

And metal---that was Sabbath, but I'd like to give a shout out to Peter Green and the original Fleetwood Mac for the "green Manalishi" which is VERY dark and metally

I mean, you didn't need to tell me, I could look at the Album and see which songs came from Willie Dixon or a variety of other blues performaners.

I have original copies of all of the Led Zeppelin vinyls and I knew that most of their earlier works were some sort of cover mainly off of Willie Dixon.

Ho-hum, tell me something we don't know about Led Zeppelin. Next thing you know you'll tell us about the Mud Shark incident like it's brand new information

They credited Willie Dixon with Whole Lotta Love? NO. At www.ledzeppelin.com the track is credited to Bonham/Jones/Page/Plant Did they credit Robert Johnson or Chester Burnett (Howlin' Wolf) for the Lemon Song? How about about Albert king for the parts of how many More times they took from his song "the Hunter"

for example, the Stones didn't do "I'm a King Bee" or Chuck berry's "carol" and say it was their own. the worst rip off they ever did was Satanic Majesties and then they were ripping off the Beatles. Cream didn't do Crossroads and Spoonful and say they were their own. When Clapton was with the Yardbirds, they didn't steal Smokestack lightning, they covered it. John Mayall didn't do "Dust My Broom" without properly crediting Robert johnson and Elmore James

Led Zeppelin stole "Whole Lotta Love" from "You Need Love" without crediting either Willie Dixon or McKinley Morganfield (Muddy)

Fleetwood Mac. (and Peter Green) When people talk about the roots of metal they are never included. However the heavy blues they recorded with Green in the band is, IMO, much heavier than Sab, Zep, or Purple.

64. Man, I thought that you were talking about me
because peter Green is one of my all time favorites. he is personal all time favorite guitarist. I thought I might have mentioned him. I assume you are talking about the neo-metalish "Green Manalishi"---I concur

I have a whole bunch of early Fleetwood Mac and recently got the expanded version of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers "A Hard Road" that has EVERYTHING Peter Green ever recorded with them. I even have Peter green's newer recordings, post-mental illness, with the Splinter Group doing Robert Johnson.

I could talk about Peter Green all night. Phenomenol guitarist, great bandleader, great singer and one of the best harmonica players I have ever heard.

69. Sometimes I wonder about "Stairway". Anecdote below....
I was surprised to learn that a song called "Merriam", which is very similar to "Stairway", by my friend Spencer Kirkpatrick (one of the great undiscovered guitarist of "the rock era") and his 1970s Capricorn records band 'Hydra' was actually written BEFORE "Stairway".

Hydra was a great, great 70's rock band. They put out 3 records. Find them and you won't be disappointed.

73. genius is the art of knowing what to steal
it is impossible to "Steal" the blues, which is all stolen from other blues.

there are only three or four basic blues motifs.

not giving credit is bogus though.
