To all you Florida haters out there ....
Imagine what would happen if South Florida secedes from the state? Yes, the blue part of my state. It's unlikely, but it's being discussed -- not completely in jest -- by a local columnist.

An online poll on www.sunsentinel.com shows that of 2540 respondents, 54.2 percent, are in favor of secession. (Check out the poll by clicking on the above link and scrolling halfway down the page. It's on the right side)

Here are excerpts from the column. The link is down below. Thanks to my DU meetup buddy, Synnical, for posting this in the Florida group.

"We'd have slot machines. They'd have school prayer."

"We'd have a class-size amendment. They'd have private school vouchers."

"We'd have sex ed. They'd have abstinence pledges."

"We'd have same-sex weddings. They'd have a defense-of-marriage act."

"We'd have the Gold Coast. They'd have the Redneck Riviera."

"We'd have Donald Trump. They'd have Donald Duck."

5. A lot of athletes live in Weston.
There's money there, but it's in Broward County, the most liberal county of the state.

7. Why I disagree.
Look at us Dems in Seminole County. We're right above Orlando.

We're making a gigantic comeback while the local GOP guy who is a follower of, he said it, folks, "family values", argues over whether he had 5 or 6 marriages.

I don't even know they'd want Donald Duck, as I have heard from more than one person that Disney promotes the homosexual agenda--you know, those scary ooga booga equal rights!! Run away, run away!

Damn you Mickey Mouse! Damn you right to hell!

10. And Donald Duck walking around with no pants
At least Mickey and Goofy have enough decency to put on pants. I guess they'll ship Donald's naked ass down to Miami.

22. An idea whose time has come.
I'm serious. North and South Florida, that's the way it should be. There is such a demographic disparity and ideological divide that there is no other solution. South Florida simply cannot continue to be dragged into fundie bible-belt wacko-dom any longer.

I voted YES!!!!
:bounce:

27. Do it. Please. But leave Naples behind.
You don't want it - there's nothing to do, and it's heavily Republican anyway (which explains the first one, I think).

Make sure to take my old home town of Immokalee with you, though. :)
