Poll question: How do you feel when you get carded?
I always feel annoyed or insulted when I get carded for something an 18 year old can buy. It kind of bugs me that so many people seem to think I look like I could be under 18 (I'm 26).

17. I find it insulting because I've worked as a high school teacher.
I don't like that people look at me and think I might be one of them (a high school kid). The same thing happens to my husband who is going to be 28 in a few months. He's been a high school teacher for 3 years now. He still gets carded for things 18 year olds can buy. My husband is a very bulky, muscular man too. Not many high school boys have his kind of build yet. I can't understand how anyone could ever mistake him for a teenager. He doesn't look that young to me, but it happens all the time.

Mostly older people make the mistake. They seem to not be able to tell the difference between someone in their mid-twenties to early thirties and a teenager. Most people that are in their mid-twenties to early thirties can differentiate between a teenager and someone their own age just based on looks.

18. I dunno about where you live, but
I know the laws here. When I work the door at the bar, EVERYONE gets carded, because according to the Liquor Commission, if you don't have ID on your person, you are considered a minor. And I know from people who've worked in convenience stores & beer vendors, that around here, the police will actually send people in who're underage but look older-ish to try and purchase restricted products.
When I ask someone for ID, it's not because I think they look like they're in high school, but because it's better to be safe than have your bar shut down, get slapped with a heavy fine, etc.

35. I'm talking about getting carded for caffeine pills at a store.
I don't take caffiene pills, but my husband does. The cashiers always card me for the damn things. I don't believe there is any law about the caffiene pills, but rather it's a store policy. I was able to buy caffience pills in high school without an ID, but now that I'm older I get carded for it. Alcohol is a different matter. I would expect to get carded for that, but I don't drink. I just thought I'd make the question more general because there are a variety of different reason why people might get carded.

and I'm 25. First time that has ever happened.

You should have seen the look I gave the kid.

But to answer the original, sometimes I get carded and sometimes I don't. I think it depends on whether I shave or not because if I don't shave, I still look like I'm in HS.

Not as much as I did 5 years ago.
I love it and I always get these responses, "You don't look your age" or "Damn!"
I even got carded for cigarettes a few months back.
That is the upside to being pissed when you're mistaken for 13 when you're 20.

6. Eh. Whatever.
I'm 29, but have been told I look younger. I get carded every now and again, for alcohol/admittance -- I don't smoke, so I have no idea whether I'd be carded for cigs.

For awhile, I was routinely getting carded buying port, Hendrick's gin, $25 bottles of wine -- after discussing ratings with the wine guy -- i.e. stuff people under 21 don't buy.

But if I tried to walk out of the liquor store with a 5-liter box of wine and a case of Milwaukee's Best, well..."no, m'am, we don't need to see your ID."

9. I got carded at clubs till I was 40.
I worked in the music biz and was in clubs fairly often.

It never really bothered me, and when I was well past 30, I started to get a kick out of it.

I only had one annoying experience when I forgot my ID and was refused a margarita at a restaurant. I was 35 at the time and on a date with a 26yo guy who wasn't even asked for his ID.

You'll get to the point where you get more grins out of it than annoyed. Be happy about it.

I've only been legal for a little over a year. The only time I was carded was when I bought a ticket to see Sin City. I've gone to many bars, but never once got carded. Went to see Sin City last month, got carded. I found that hilarious.

The penalties that store clerks and owners face for a violation are pretty bad. Most places have a policy that if you look under 30 you should be carded.

36. I know about the laws regarding cigarettes and alcohol
because I was a cashier for many years. What I get annoyed about is when I get carded for buying something like caffeine pills. There are other types of over the counter drugs that I've been carded for too, probably because they contain caffeine. I get carded for buying things like sparklers too. Oh, I even got carded for buying white out once, which I totally wasn't expecting. Do I look like I'm 10 or something? Geeze.

23. I've never been carded
I've only bought alcohol a couple times and I guess I looked old enough.

Where I work now I have to sell alcohol and rarely card anyone just because I'm lazy. However, if I did I would never mean it to insult anyone; someone would have to look extremely young for me to decide to card them. Some people are just horrible judges of age, though.

24. Elated! Excited! As giddy as a school girl!
If I were carded for something an 18-year-old could buy, I'd be walking on air the rest of the day, especially if I thought the person asking for my I.D. really WAS unsure! I'm almost 39.

You shouldn't feel insulted. Most places card if you look under 30. Be happy they don't assume you are over 30.

Yes, I have read why clerks card people who are probably older, but I do automatically think "Do I look like a child?" At least it isn't as bad as when last year, a door to door salesman asked if my parents were home. I am 27. I know that I won't look young forever so I shouldn't complain.

31. Disbelieving
The gay bars in Chicago will, for the most part, card EVERYONE...you can be 89 years old, with a walker, and you'll still get carded.

Well, I'm not 89 years old...but at the same time, I'm well past 21. That milestone passed a while ago. I'm still disbelieving when I get carded.

32. it is no longer a compliment
When you're well into your forties and you still get carded, you realize it is not about complimenting anyone for their youth. It is about control. "We Card Under 40" -- which means in practice that snoopy clerks and guards card even women who are quite obviously already 40, thank you -- is just an excuse for more snoops to get into my business and find out my name, address, etc. Even "We Card Under 27" is questionable, because no 27 year old looks like an 18 year old. No, not even you. Not if you are Ashton Kuschner himself.

Plus it ticks off my partner who is quite a bit younger and doesn't get carded because he doesn't look like someone the clerk feels like hitting on or snooping on today.

So everyone involved ends up feeling disrespected whether they're carded or not.

34. It's not an insult and it doesn't mean people think you look like a kid
I work retail. The law says I have to card anyone who looks like they are younger than 30 years old. If I do not and the person is either underage or a Fed running a sting operation (something that happens regularly), both I and the store I work in can be fined and I can lose my job.

Sorry, but my job is more important to me than your feelings getting hurt. It's not personal but you really need to give this more thought. If you've worked as a high school teacher, you must be aware of the number of underage people who get cigarettes and alcohol illegally. You also must be aware of how easy it is for some of those kids to appear over 18. If you think this is a good thing, by all means get uptight and insulted about being carded. If you think it's not, quit complaining. We're trying to do our job and keep this shit out of the hands of minors.

41. But what if you are getting carded for buying white out,
super glue, caffiene pills, sparklers, etc? I don't buy alcohol or cigarettes. I'm getting carded now for stuff that I used to be able to buy as a kid without question. It makes me wonder if they really think I'm that young. It's super annoying when I get carded for one of these products when I happen to be shopping with my 2 year old son. I just wonder if these people think I'm some sort of irresposible teen mommy who cannot be trusted with white out because I'm going to huff it to get high. I just think it's ridiculous the things I get carded for.

It was after dark at an outside event. I just laughed and told him to shine his flashlight at my forehead and look at all the wrinkles sonny. It bothered me until I quit getting carded at 30 because no one would take me seriously because I looked like a really young bimbo with no experience. At least really young with no experience. Enjoy it and put up with it. Eventually it won't happen.
