My "modern ruins" pics.
Edited on Tue May-17-05 11:56 AM by UdoKier
I have been interested in modern ruins since I was a kid. I spent my summers on my Grandma's defunct poultry ranch, which had once been the largest in the US. There were all kinds of fascinating things in the various outbuildings and apartments and offices.

When my wide and I were dating, we explored the ruins of an old hotel and marina on the edge of California's hellish Salton sea, (It was razed in 2001).

Here are pics from that visit. This place was amazing. There were dozens and dozens of residential streets prepared all over the place - a substantial development, but only maybe a dozen houses (most still inhabited) were ever built It was about 110 degrees. What a hellhole.

funny graffiti in hotel

View from ballroom(?)

Some people were stupid back in '92 too.

These are some houses that were buried by the eruption of the Fugendake Volcano in Kyushu Japan. We visited there in '96. We looked inside one of the house's upper floors, a child's bedroom, and found everything intact and spotless. There were children's coloring books and toys all around the room. I couldn't help but wonder what had happened to the family that lived here. There was no graffiti and most items seemed to be left alone, unlike here in the U.S.

Here's the album if you want to see higher res pics.

2. Check this out
I don't vouch for the creators, they are racist pricks, but the pics are AMAZING. I found this when I was doing a reserach project on urban sprawl.

4. They are interesting pics and it's a sicko website.
I love how they blame Detroit's decline on the blacks that were lured there by good jobs, rather than on the auto companies who took all the jobs away...

7. they definitely have a warped sense of reality
but damn those photos are really intriguing. For some reason I am fascinated by the effects of the flight of industry from cities. I guess because my hometown had a similar thing happen to it (Trenton NJ), although it's nowhere near as bad as Detroit, but for whatever reason I love seeing pictures like these.

Now I'm going to have to look for some pictures we took about 7 years ago when we went to Detroit for a Tigers game.

I like that kind of stuff too, but I don't know of many around here that I can go to. With the exception of downtown Cleveland..lol.
Thanks for the thread.

6. Another brilliant link in one day!
My cup runneth over. Thank you thank you thank you. I'm repopulating my favourites list fast.

Great photos, BTW. One day I must figure out the whole digital thing and post some of mine.

If you're into ruins, modern or otherwise, can I recommend "The Built, The Unbuilt And The Unbuildable", by Robert Harbison.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0262581221/qid=1116346883/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_0_2/026-6548317-6422004

It contains an excellent chapter on the appeal and romance of ruins and traces of what has passed. It's a great book generally, in fact.

10. These photos are 10 years old, they're analog/scanned.
In fact, we still don't yet have a digital camera, though I know we should get one.

I'm still paying for the DV video camera...
