My back is fucking KILLING me.
This weekend, my boss asked a few of us to come in, volunarily, to do raze the back garden of our restaurant to make way for a patio/extension.

So on saturday, I came in really early and uprroted every damn thing in the garden, busted out the tiller and flattened the whole goddamn thing by myself...and now I'm paying the price. I've never had back problems before, but this shit is suckin' something fierce.

OW.

3. did you get paid for this work?
I would hope double for the trouble you have now...

do you think it is muscle pain or something more?

I suffer from herniated discs and I did a lot of gardening this weekend so I premedicated with ibuprofen and then made sure to take a bit more today...I also "pre-iced" my back...just to ward off any swelling..

7. Oh yeah. I needed the money, so I said "yup."
The labor I do is pretty physical, anyways (lots of running, lifting, climbing up three staircases with 70-lbs trays of frozen mussels, etc.), but I was totally not accustomed to the abuse you give your body when you need to move massive amounts of dirt from one place to another using a rake....

13. I have a rice pack on my shoulders now
Really works to relax muscles. I always use this when my back/shoulders are out and it makes it feel so much better.

Also, my aunt from Canada brings me these pills called Robax that makes my back pain go away in 1/2 hr. Good stuff!

38. if it's not better pretty soon
I highly recommend acupuncture if you are receptive (ignore this if you can't stand the thought). It is really great for this kind of back spasm. My old Dad had back pain (from overwork) so bad he couldn't even move, and was so desperate he agreed to trying acupuncture (pain killers weren't really working). He was so amazed he couldn't believe it. Went back to the acupuncturist after 2 treatments and she said "how's it doing?" He said "Somewhat better." She said "How much better?" He smiled and said, "well, actually it's ALL better..."

Anyway, that's my plug for acupuncture.

41. worked for me too
I used to have really bad back pain about 10 years ago, but accupuncture and tai-chi ( have been doing it for years) have helped immeasurably. The accupuncture guy was even an MD!

hope you feel better, RKZ!

27. Ask your doctor for some prescription strength Naproxen
And what you can do is alternate cold and heat packs to the back - 20 minutes of each.

37. Muscle Relaxant/Downer Like Valium or Xanax
Stay hydrated and when the spasms stop, try to do knee-to-chest stretches.

Then, go to a chiropractor, it'll reduce a 2-week long painfest to 4 days. I get back spasms about twice a year in the lower back, it's horrible.

The chiro's the best way to go for people without serious back problems.

39. If you can afford it, get a professional massage in a few days
They help to relax, assuming it is just sore muscles. Until then, self medicate with beer.

40. See if you can get a doc...
to write a prescription for Clinoril or Flexoril-- just for a few days.

I threw my back out years ago, and that shit was GREAT! Highly habit-forming, so you don't want to take it for TOO long, but it'll do the trick until you feel better.
