It didn't used to be that way. Years ago I was in a wreck and was off a year. The minute I was able to go back to work, they put me to work. They checked on me frequently while I was off and I recieved a Christmas bonus like everyone else.
In my line of work it is impossible to do the work if you have some physical disabilities. But I have a disability of sorts (mental) and they have accomodated me and stood by me when I needed to be hospitalized.
When I had my neck surgery. Because my job is very physical, I wanted to be completely healed before I returned and my boss agreed. I could have gone back after 8 months but it was getting close to the holidays then so he suggested I wait until after the New Year.
I'm very fortunate in my boss - the corporation who owns the company can be real jerks but my boss will stick his neck out for me.
