I need a single-malt recommendation
It's our 15th anniversary this June, so I'd thought I'd get my partner a 15 year-old single malt. Any suggestions? We like Laphroaig but have only tried the 10 year-old.

5. It is one of the smoothest single malts you will ever try its also full
bodied but its better than many companies older single malts (it 10 years old) now if you want to go whole hog then try Glenmorangie Tain L’Hermitage 1975 but that will probably set you back a 175 bucks if you can find it.

2. Hubby loves 'The Balvenie' aged 21 years, priced at 15 or so.
He's not here.... if he was he'd be giving you recommendations...sorry.

8. Priced at 15 ?

15 hundred dollars ? ..

15 thousand ? ..

SURELY you dont mean 15 dollars ! ...

NO single malt costs 15 dollars ...

As a sometimes purveyor of scotch: I know the cheapest single malt to be "The Dalmore", at about $20 per 750 ml ....

Note: it is a single 'highland' malt ... something must be bad about that ....

4. Try the 15-year Laphroaig.
It's even MORE redolent of salty motor oil. :9

(I mean that. I love it.)

If you like Laphroaig, try the other Islay malts. Lagavulin (16-year) is an excellent place to start.

7. Thanks for the suggestions.
I've never tried the 15. I guess that should've been an obvious choice.

12. The 16-year Lagavulin was my first thought for recommendation
for the special scotch for this anniversary.

Though a 15 year old Balvenie is also an excellent choice.

6. So many to choose from.
I do like Laphroaig, but it's SO smoky that I don't pair it with food.

Maybe Oban, or Bunnahabhain (sp?)--We buy Edradour when we're celebrating, but that's only because it's distilled in Pitlochry, where we were staying when we were married.

Happy (upcoming) 15th!

11. Laphroiag pairs with steak like HEAVEN!
Mmmm........whether drinking it with a steak, or using it as the base for the sauce for your pan fried steak. Yummy!!

15. Steak? What's that?
Infidel, you mock me?

Everyone know that a nice single-malt is best with tofu--takes on the flavor of whatever it's paired with, y'know.
Oh, and french fries, too.

16. Well, I know YOU wouldn't have it with steak...
but it is good with it, just the same...

I don't know if I'd want Laphroiag with tofu. I think I'll stick with the sake or the tea, drinks that are made to go with tofu.

Mmmmmm.....I love tofu.

9. I've been working my way through
a Glennfiddich Special Reserve that's been good to me...when my FIL visits he tends to bring me a little something. He says I gave him 3 beautiful grandchildren, the least he can do is help keep me medicated. I love him.

10. I really like Talisker...
...it's very smoky and peppery...but I need a lot more comparative experience.

13. Two I would recommend
Edited on Sat May-14-05 11:38 PM by NV Whino
Dalwinnie--sweet and light but ever so good
Lagavulin--smoky, but not as smoky as Laphroaig

Both my favorites depending on my mood.

Check out this site. http://www.maltwhiskey.com/default2.htm

I went to school with Charles and recently discovered he has this terrific site for malt whiskey.

17. Dalwhinnie is excellent
But my tastes run away from the peaty flavor of Laphroig. I really prefer smooth. Now that I have a few bucks, I think I am going to buy a bottle of Johnnie Green. Or maybe even blue.
