There seems to be so much talk today of people being nasty and people saying untoward things to others and attitude and then I remember that there's an "ignore" feature that really ought to work well, since everything else on this site seems to work well.

When my kids got into that mode, they got put into separate rooms until they calmed down and then I fed them Pudding Pops and Kool-Aid until they passed out in a sugar coma. After that, they were pretty easy to handle.

Seriously, the dynamic you describe is part of the human condition. No amount of rulemaking or preaching has ever been able to change it - witness the anger of Al Qaeda because people just won't behave and believe properly - and nothing ever will.

Sure, good manners should prevail, and, from what I've seen, in the vast majority of the gazillions of posts here, they do. I'm astonished at the amount of energy, time, and space devoted to what appears to have been an unusual set of incidents (all of which, I am certain, have been deleted).

As I've written, this whole situation seems to me to be an able metaphor for the condition of the Democrats today - they seem to be so intent on making sure that everyone is comfortable and not offended and perhaps even properly tucked in that they're not aware that the Other Party is handing them their (and our) collective asses.

There comes a point where the only thing a parent can say to a kid who comes running into the house once again, crying and wailing again that someone is being mean to him, is "Get out there and handle it yourself."

Then you watch from the window to make sure your kid is safe. But, your kid learns a valuable lesson, even if it's to make sure to avoid that someone in the future. Teaching the kid to suck it up and continue on is the hardest part of the parenting job, or so it seems at the time.

One thing I have noticed here, though, is that some people, when they're called on their bad behavior, immediately start recounting their own personal psychiatric histories - depression, suicide attempts, other acting out - as if that somehow gives them license to behave badly.

That's something I find deeply unsettling.
