WTF????
Edited on Thu May-12-05 04:44 PM by Bouncy Ball
So my husband does a little fixing of computers on the side, just as a favor for friends and coworkers. Same thing a lot of people do.

A guy he works with who is a hardcore right winger and who often writes bush letters about how he should try again to get the Constitutional amendment against gay marriage passed came up to husband and said something was wrong with his laptop, could he look at it?

This guy rails on and on about gay people not only shouldn't have rights, they should "go back in the closet." My husband never says anything, in the name of workplace harmony, but the boss does take note of it and even though he basically agrees, has asked the guy to cut it out.

So anyway, Mr. Bouncy is trying to figure out the problem and he does a virus scan and finds a few. He told me all the details, but computer speak sounds like this to me: "blahblahblahblahblahblahblah." Like the adults on "Peanuts." So I'll spare you that.

Long story short, the viruses were from all the gay porn sites the guy goes to. Tons of sites, apparently. When the guy came over to ask him if he had figured it out, Mr. Bouncy just tells him "yeah" and he says "so what is it?" and he recommends one of those virus protection programs then says "it was from one or two of those porn sites you've uh....been going to. They're usually pretty bad about that." He didn't say this where anyone else could hear it, people were at lunch. Well the guy laughed and said pretty loudly "I DO like some T&A!" And my husband said "Well these were gay porn sites, but whatever."

He said the guy just sort of tried to say something, but kept stopping, his eyes were all big, he grabbed the laptop from Mr. Bouncy (uh, thanks for FIXING it!) and stormed off.

Then later he came up to him and said he had NO idea who had STOLEN his laptop and was using it to look at such FILTH, but he had cleaned out all those DISGUSTING sites out of the history file (apparently before Mr. Bouncy told him about it, he didn't know what a history file was). My husband said he didn't really CARE what he looked at and the guy got all bent out of shape again.

He was so upset and railing on and on, my husband finally said "Fine, someone stole your computer to look at gay porn. Whatever."

2. your husband is golden
What a great day.

I just formulated a new theory though about these guys. They really don't believe they might actually not be completely straight, yet something in their tiny little hindbrains recognizes that they're fascinated by gay stuff, so they disguise that fascination in the only acceptable reason to be fascinated by it - to rail against it. It would never occur to them to be a bit more accepting.

A complicated way to say they hate themselves I guess. Still I have no pity.

5. So a closeted self-loathing
gay man?

Which is exactly what I thought.

That guy's lucky--he asked the only guy in the whole place who doesn't give a shit which way he swings to fix his computer. If one of those other guys had gotten hold of it, there'd be no END to the shit they'd give him.

Funny thing is, this was a few days ago and my husband hasn't breathed a word of it to anyone (except me and I don't know the guy or work there) but the guy acts all jumpy around him, like he's expecting him to spill his secret at any moment.

30. As tempted as I am to laugh, that poor bastard must be in agony.
I can't imagine how much pain he must feel. If I were your husband, I would suggest couseling to come to terms with his sexuality. The guy sounds like he's about one rumor away from suicide.

34. Well, I did tell him that he might think about
reassuring the guy that he's not going to tell anyone, because I think he's mainly living in fear of Mr. Bouncy blabbing to the office, which he wouldn't.

As for his sexuality, I dunno. I'm not sure Mr. Bouncy would feel comfortable suggesting that.

54. I think that is an excellent idea, BB.
If this dude is afraid and feels threatened, he may resort to some reindeer games in the work place, to silence your husband, or get him out of the way. No, I'm not suggesting criminal stuff...maybe. Still, this man is, I'm thinking, humiliated and defensive and scared, and these emotions could turn into self-righteous anger against your man. I've seen it happen, when a nut-job's vulnerabilities are exposed (think sexual overtures in the workplace, declined).

Maybe your husband could defuse the situation.

But oh shit, you gotta love it. How funny.

41. Yeah.
I hate to see people in THAT state of denial--the point at which they're obviously in a lot of pain and probably have frequent self-destructive thoughts. I'm not saying anyone should ever tolerate bigotry or people making bigoted statements, and I'm not saying I could bring myself to tell someone that deep in denial to come out, but I couldn't be insensitive either and yeah, I might discretely suggest he get help.

15. I don't necessarily want to defend this jerk but...
There are virus and spy ware programs that initiate a "porn bomb" that creates all kinds of shortcuts & links to porn sites.

I've seen it happen on computers when there is absolutely no record of porn sites being visited.

Or he's just your average homophobe who "doth protest too much".

Oh and the Fox news site, apparently.

44. It bothers me.
But I think because he works with so many right-wingers he has to sort of shut down that part of himself at work. Otherwise, he'd just explode everyday. They don't even know how he voted in November, and they have asked him, plenty (they suspect he's a Democrat and keep trying to get him to come out of the closet!).

But he reminds them it's a secret ballot and he doesn't have to tell anyone shit. They do see my occasional letters to the editor in the paper, so they know how I feel, for sure.

So in the interest of not going postal on their asses every day, he becomes an apolitical creature every morning when he walks in the door of his office.

I guess it's smart and I admire his restraint. God knows I couldn't do it and when he tells me some of the things they say it pisses ME off.

I worked as a systems analsyst in that kind of environment for 5 years. They all listened to Rush (I did too - they just didn't know it) - and they would all jump up from their cubes when rush said something particularly witty - like a bunch of gophers.

My boss, who didn't know I listened - would come over to my cube and say , "you know, I've been thinking...." and regurgitate whatever rush was saying 15 minutes ago! God, what a jerk. Of course, having already heard what he was about to say, I usually was prepared for a debate...

Edited on Thu May-12-05 05:32 PM by Jamastiene
"That's freaking sweet." I love it when someone is rabidly anti-gay in what they say, yet the truth is revealed. Usually, that kind of intense homophobic preaching (I call it preaching when they never shut up about that one topic) means they have internal issues and cannot live with themselves knowing they have the desires. I know someone who used to do that until they met me. Now, they never say anything antigay in front of me any more, and from what I have heard, they don't elsewhere either. I did something resourceful and clever, outside my normal psychology realm as far as knowing how to handle situations, that worked on her. She seems to be trying to be respectful to me now. I liked her even though she was homophobic before, because I caught her looks at me and knew why she was staying on the topic quite so much. It was actually a compliment once I saw the looks. Before that, it hurt my feelings and pissed me off. What I did might not have made her come out, but she sure knows I don't like that kind of talk. It was a semi success. I would have gone out with her had she been willing to tell me instead of just looking. I didn't have the guts to ask her and push her into anything though. If she at least doesn't go around talking like that now, I see it as a little push toward the good side for one person. She's great otherwise. She was stereotyping gay women by saying those things to me, a gay woman who doesn't fit the stereotype. So one person seeing a little bit of truth about stereotyping people and learning from it is better than nothing.
