A couple of users announce their intentions to take a break from DU yesterday. Some folks in the Lounge responded nicely, others did not.

You'd figure that would be the end of it, but it wasn't.

Hours later there were four posts made that were thinly-veiled personal attacks -- two pointed in the direction of those who were leaving and two pointed in the direction of someone who reponded nicely to those leaving. (That last person would be me because I referred to those who like to stir the preverbial pot as 'fucknuggets')

Bottom line, we have some folks here on DU who believe:

1) If someone gets under my skin, I'm allowed to poke fun at that person's physical condition.

2) If someone supports the person I don't like, I'm allowed to attack that person too.

3) I would never treat an animal with distain, but people are deserving of my wrath

4) I don't care who's feelings I hurt in my effort to be funny.

5) Yeah, I support equal rights for all -- except the people who disagree with me

6) I don't care if this is a public space... if they don't agree with me, they deserve what they get.

While I appreciate the sentiment of your post, that's not EXACTLY what happened.

I am not going to do a play-by-play of months and months of " You attacked my physical appearance" ad nauseum. For those of you who are truly curious, the search function is a wonderful little tool. :)

I wonder what the general concensus would have been had a black person taken a break from DU and someone posted "Wow, does it seem lighter in here to you?"

I cannot remember one time that either of the two posters who left attacked someone based on physical appearance. But I can remember many times when little *wink*wink*, *nudge*nudge* posts were made at their expense.

I'm not naive enough to think that in a large group of people that everyone is going to love everyone. I do believe, however, that well-intentioned people act politely -- even in the face of adversity. Although I may not like the personality or opinion of another person, I have no right to attack that person on the basis of his/her religion, skin color, disability, sexual preference, ethnic background, body type, hair color, etc. To do so would only serve to belittle myself.

When that type of mean-spirited exchange is made publically here on DU, it belittles every one of us who are not willing toss out a penalty flag.

I had a tire blow out while I was going 70 on I-35 last night. On my way HOME from class and not to class, thank goodness. I couldn't get the lug nuts off so I called Mr. Bouncy and he came out, didn't want me out on the side of that road anyway, people get hit all the time.

Other than that, pretty good.

24. Yeah. I thought something huge hit the side of my car at first.

But I never lost control. It's a good vehicle. The first few seconds after it happened, I thought "Huh, must be ok." Then I felt and heard the tell-tale flop flop flop of a blown out tire. Ug. And I was in the far left lane and had to fight my way over to the right shoulder (no left shoulder).

What was even more fun was driving all the way home on the Tiny Tire. LOL!!
