How can I handle my unneutered/unspayed cat until next week?
She's starting to act funny, meowing a lot and *that* way, I think... I made an appointment for the end of next week for the neutering/spaying (not sure which, she's a girl). Can't move the appointment sooner, so how do I deal with this (other than getting her a nice man date)? What can I expect? She's not going to be like that 24/7, is she?

:scared:

1. Expect her to twitch her tail and ask for some "attention" for a while

8. That's how I started to notice...
I was petting her yesterday, and she wouldn't leave me alone. Meowed at me for about five minutes while I was making dinner...

3. Yes, she is
Keep her inside, give her lots of love and wear earplugs. I once had a cat who would not leave my husband alone when she came in heat - I was nearly jealous by the time it was over - she was shameless!

Oh, and it's spaying with a female. :hi:

6. Spaying...thank you....
She's an inside cat, so that's covered...she's not so bad right now, she was rolling around on the floor a few minutes ago.... man oh man.

5. she'll sleep
but it's really not that bad. She may mark territory, so if you can keep her in a room away from too much furniture go for it.

The benefit of my cat going into heat was that for a while afterwards other cats were drawn very strongly to my coat. :)

7. I thought only boys did that!
Yuccckkkk.... thanks for saying it's not too bad though. This is the first time I'm experiencing this, even though I had cats on and off as a kid. Hmm. Maybe I blocked out the memories? :)

9. We had to take down and wash our curtains
I'm not sure if all females do it, and I never actually saw her do anything, but it sure seemed like something was up.

11. It's going to be 24/7
When she starts doing the backstroke across the living room floor, put her in a room where she can be comfy by herself, and get those ear plugs. Unless you, er, well, have q-tips around the house. I saw that one in the cat bible I have somewhere around here.

16. Another poster explained that...
I didn't know they shouldn't spay her in heat...but how do I know when it's "between" heats? I know nothing about this...ugh!

19. Trust me, you'll know
If your baby girl is anything like mine was, the sudden quiet will be your biggest clue. From my own experience, once she's settled down after this one, move fast! I swear mine seemed to be on a two-week cycle.

And good luck!

13. When I've had female kitties
it's generally lasted for around three days. They do have to sleep sometime, but it can drive one crazy in the meantime. Hang in there, in a week she'll be fine.

14. You don't want the appt moved sooner.
You may want to have it done later, though. The operation could be dangerous until she is calmer. Has to do with the engorgement of her uterus in preparation for pregnancy. She could hemmorage on the operating table and die.

My kitty, Miss May, almost did die. She had a hormonal problem and was in heat almost constantly. She lost weight and clumps of fur and we thought she might just waste away, so we tried to have the operation done in between "episodes" but missed and it was touch and go on the operating table.

Miss May's OK now, but she is the sluttiest cat I know. She is shamelessly addicted to cuddles and petting and sometimes acts like she's in heat, but is definately not.

15. Oh no...should they have asked me that?
I didn't realize that she shouldn't be spayed while in heat. How can you gauge "between episodes"? My town has a program for doing the procedure, but if they don't know what they're doing, maybe I'd better go to the vet.

18. You'll know
Sounds like she's still winding up. Pretty soon she'll start in with the worlds most annoying and pitiful yowl (if she hasn't already) and rubbing herself across the floor, the furniture and anything else in a rather annoying needy way.

You'll know it's over when she leaves you alone and lets you sleep. ;) In the meantine, be very careful in case she tries to get outside.
