Famous Blue Raincoat

I don't know the basis for any of the Cohen lyrics on this CD. Does anyone else? I'm especially curious about "Famous Blue Raincoat" and "A Singer Must Die."

I can't believe that I have had the pleasure of immersing myself in this album for almost twenty years. :wow: I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new CD.

2. Leonard Cohen?
I really tried to get into Leonard Cohen but I found I always felt like opening a vein while listening to his stuff. So many artists are so big on his stuff, though.

5. it's changed on the Warnes album:
"but she never turned up, I mean Lili Marlane" --

I've always imagined this was a three-way love affair. The singer, the object of the song, and Jane. ???

6. That's funny, I always thought that too...
In fact, for a long time, I thought that that was intended.

4. One morning in a donut shop, many years ago....
As I waited to go in to my temporary gig--I heard something familiar on the Muzak. It was an easy listening, orchestral version of "Famous Blue Raincoat." Surreal. No, I don't know what it means, either.

To those who find Leonard depressing, let me just say that our local folk star here in Houston was Townes van Zandt.

7. I thought Famous Blue Raincoat was about
men's desire to posses women, and women's posession of men... or something. He wrote the slightly different version Warnes sings on that record as well.
