Which place makes the best sandwich where you live?
I live in Chicago. There are many fine Italian Beef places (Johnnie's on North in Elmwood park is the best). However, the best sandwich in Chicago is from Bari on Grand. It is a grocery store/deli. D'Mato's (great bakery next door) makes the bread. I prefer the prosciutto/tomato/mozzarella sammich. Real imported prosciutto, fresh made mozzarella. MMMM

What about you folks?

2. Nowhere. I live in Seattle.
It's not exactly a town where they have good delis or you can get a good sandwich. Funny you bring it up, because I have a craving for a club sandwich and there is nowhere to get one downtown.

5. Safeway
...believe it or not.

The "Smoke Stack" is my personal favorite.

* Smoked Turkey Breast
* Black Forest Ham
* Smoked Fontina Cheese
* Green Leaf Lettuce
* Tomatoes and Spicy Mustard Dressing
* Olive Mix
* Served on Multi-Grain Bread

...but you have to order it on regular whole wheat bread, because the multi-grain roll they use is hard as a rock. Other than that, it's perfect.

7. Detroit-Russell Street Deli. I went there for lunch today.
I had a smoked turkey sandwich, with provolone and lettuce, on an onion roll, with pesto-mayonaise. Mmmm.
I also had a cup of garlic soup, which was to die for.

8. I'm in No. VA (Alexandria)...
...in nearby Arlington (and luckily for me, very close to where I work) there is a deli called simply "The Italian Store" that has excellent sandwiches. Great imported Italian prosciutto, capicola, etc.

New York Kosher Deli style, extensive menu. When celebrities come to San Diego they eat here. B&W head shots of Hollywood,News,Political and Sports personalities all over the walls here. Sandwiches 4 inches thick with cole slaw and there own Kosher pickles.
If you live in San Diego you've heard of this place.

All the sandwiches are... well, perfect. The Italian sausage is sublime; and I would be willing to kill a man for the spicy sopressata.

13. aside from home-made, nowhere...
We had one good deli and it closed, simply because it brought me joy to eat there.

All of the grinder/sub shops are about the level of Quiznos here.

My all time favorite mass market sub chain, Togos, isn't here either. I've been known to kill for a turkey and guacamole with provolone and sun dried tomatos.

27. 20 years ago, when I lived in orange county, CA
Before togos exploded into a chain, they were awesome with over 200 sub choices. Then, they franchaised and it all went downhill.

Even so, our choices for sammitches are:

Jersey Mikes (fine for cheesesteaks, everything else is meh)
Quiznos (meh also)
Subway (avoid like the plague)
Sub Shak (local chain, fine if you like intestinal cramps)
Blimpie (meh)

Our area sucks for deli food.

Edited on Thu May-12-05 01:09 PM by new_beawr
Roy's has been around for over 40 years and has over two hundred sandwiches on the menu. Quality has been spotty, but they're back to the high level they had years ago.

Runners Up:
Parkway Deli - Silver Spring, MD
Half Moon Barbecue - Silver Spring, MD
Cuban Corner - Rockville, MD

19. We're not really known for our sandwiches in MS, but we
do have some good ones. We're more known for fried chicken, mashed potatoes, greens, mac-n-cheese, potato salad, anything BBQ, anything fried, and lots of good desserts. Mmmm!!

25. Grand Central Deli and Spirits in Charlotte, NC
It's directly across the street from the Bank of America headquarters right in the middle of downtown. Owned and operated by NYC carpetbaggers who only serve Boars Head meats. GREAT sandwiches.

Oh, and it becomes a nightclub on the weekends. I work there.

My favourite sandwich came from Rosario's, which was also a small Italian grocer, but they closed down a few months back :( So my second choice ( and it's a fine second) is Amighetti's on The Hill *YUM*
