"Bill Gates advice to kids"
I got this as an email forward (from a republican co worker who is one of the least informed people I have ever me, or is that redundant?):

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! To anyone with kids of any age, here's some advice.

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually
have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

If you agree, pass it on.
If you can read this - Thank a teacher!
If you are reading it in English -Thank a soldier!!

MY REPLY, after a 18 second search: Jeff, you really should check these things better before forwarding them. http://www.snopes.com/language/document/liferule.htm

Why do I ONLY get these forwards from republicans? My in-laws send them to me too. I never get this crap from dems.

1. Gates DID NOT say that...it's an "Urban Myth"
Gates was / IS an oppotunistic little WORM who took technology that people left unguarded and assmiliated it into his Borg collective of a company.

Gates is a slacker and a tool and wouldn't know the meaning of hard work if it BIT HIM ON THE ASS.

http://www.snopes.com/language/document/liferule.htm

Claim: Bill Gates authored a list of 'Rules Kids Won't Learn in School.'

Status: False.

Origins: No,
this list didn't originate with Microsoft head Bill Gates. (It's frequently cited on the Internet as having come from his book Business @ The Speed of Thought, but it didn't.) Why it's attributed to Gates is a mystery to us; it doesn't really sound the least bit like something he would write. Possibly, the item the Internet-circulated version of the list generally ends with ("Be nice to nerds") struck a chord with someone who views Gates as the ultimate successful nerd of all time.

One version that appeared on the Internet in June 2002 asserts this is the text of a commencement speech given by Bill Gates to the graduating class of Mt. Whitney High School in Visalia, California. It isn't — he didn't give such a speech, and folks at that school are mystified as to why they've been dragged into this apocryphal story.

Nor is this list the work of Kurt Vonnegut, another person to whom authorship has been attributed. A clue found in those versions ("From a college graduation speech by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.") explains why folks want to lay these random words of wisdom on his doorstep: In 1998, the Internet was swept with a narrative that has come to be known as the sunscreen speech. That work of inventive fiction was actually the product of Chicago Tribune writer Mary Schmich, but Internet-circulated versions claimed it was a college graduation speech given by Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut thus became associated in the minds of some people with pithy advice to young adults.

This list is the work of Charles J. Sykes, author of the book Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can't Read, Write, Or Add.

10. Yep, after I hit "post message"...should have done a self-delete.
Sorry about that...

I just see that "Gates" quote and see RED. I "react." I'm not a Gates fan at all.

That got posted in my church bulletin one week, along with a thoughtful analysis from the priest. I had to tell him where it came from, but he had no reaction whatsoever.

14. The analysis wasn't actually that bad...
...it was along the lines of "nothing worth having gets handed to you, you have to WORK for it"...

It just steamed me that he was passing this out to my 5000+ member church as if it were the ethic of Bill Gates.

By the way, I just posted a thread on Gates saying the iPod won't last ( http://music.yahoo.com/read/news/19188631 ) in the Lounge...he says "I think you can draw parallels here with the computer — here, too, Apple was once extremely strong with its Macintosh and graphic user interface, like with the iPod today, and then lost its position."

...and that's TRUE, because he basically RIPPED OFF everything that was great from Apple while they were napping.

So much for "hard work."

2. You think that's bad.. I got the Ollie North/Osama Bin Laden
BS email a few days ago from a repuke relative.. You know the one that was debunked about 5 years ago on Ollie North's own website. You're right, they seem to always come from gullible repukes. They believe anything they're told. That's Faux Newz's/BushCo's business model.

6. I thought Gates' rule No. 1 was "if can't earn it steal it."

7. Rule 12...
Don't make your software as good as it can be, but make each update slightly better so people will cough up $200 a piece for an OS that still has major flaws, but a few less than the last version.

9. My advice in return, which is far more grounded in reality:
Edited on Thu May-12-05 11:20 AM by HypnoToad
Rule 1: Life is what we make of it.

Rule 2: It shouldn't be about winning. It MUST be how you play the game.

Rule 3: Said the guy who (a) dropped out of high school and must be speaking of the current vice-president, whose presidential partner didn't win the first election legitimately.

Rule 4: Especially when that boss offshores and automates without a damn about you.

Rule 5: Grandparents, at the time, could have LIVED off of flipping burgers. Today you need THREE such jobs to live off of it.

Rule 6: We all mess up. It's called being human.

Rule 7: So the closet in one's domicile is more important than the environment we ALL MUST have to live in?

Rule 8: This goes back to rule #2, and not all of us were able to (a) leach off of IBM and then (b) create licensing schemes tantamount to exortion to make a buck... amongst other things.

Rule 9: Well Gates. You, unlike your children, have power. STFU and use your money and influence to make American schools yar-round. Stop WHINING at us about this failure.

Rule 10: We've seen Microsoft's commercials too and they are as far from real life as "Friends". Once again, STFU.

Rule 11: You're no nerd. You're a fascist. We know your marketing/business tactics and you're an economic Hitler.
Gates is feces.

Now who did write the rule list so I can alter my rules accordingly then shove 'em down HIS throat? (My rules to Gates still apply.)
