1. Define "IQ"
I have tested very very high in "general" intelligence (150), but it's mostly due to emotional, verbal, and science skills; but I lack spacial intelligence, which explains my poor math skills.

OOOPS!!!!!!!! Premature Exit, Stage Left!

Thank you for you're very kind message! I jumped the gun! Yesterday everything changed and my uber commitments just evaporated (which is good). I am now the user who "cried wolf" so please disregard any subsequent histrionic messages you may see where I announce my departure. If I use the "Frank Sinatra" standard, I've got six more farewell tours!

Thanks again for you very kind response. Now you're on my ultra-buddy list!

10. Didn't they "recalibrate" IQ scores fairly recently?
Edited on Thu May-12-05 01:07 AM by leftofthedial
I know what mine was when last tested, but I don't know what it means on today's scale.

Besides, after 27 years of marriage (soon to be over!), I'm sure I lost more than a few points! LOL

12. OK, Crazy Guggenheim, here's a thread I can relate to!
I think IQ's can be useful if you know yours...It doesn't show everything of course...

Mine is in the mid 120's...I had it tested in college and I was dismayed to see it low (or so I considered it!). My husband's is in the 170's or so...genius level. But there are some things that I'm better at than he is, and of course vice versa...I think of it as a fairly good indicator of what native abilities you have; what you do with them is of course up to you!

14. I hesitate to tell you this...
My IQ is so high that there is no word for it in English. There is a word in Hungarian that represents it, but if it is pronounced it produces hearing damage, and if written it requires alpha-numeric symbols that are unintelligible to anyone but three people on earth: Me, Murray Gellman, and Oprah Winfrey.

19. IQ tests aren't very reliable as far as predicting intelligence

They are more for categorizing normal from retarded. As in, you get below 80, you are retarded.

Anything above 100 is pure speculation.

Achievement tests and aptitude tests are the only things worth bothering with.

23. It's considered to be high
but I have never felt that the score was right. I always thought that my score should be much lower.
For that reason alone, I think that IQ tests are a bunch of crap.

25. All that I.Q. tests measure
is the ability to complete I.Q. tests.

I heard somewhere that king george outperformed J.F. Kerry in an I.Q. test - I think that that rather proves the point.

28. I think they are highly subject to test administrator bias...
and above and beyond that are a very crude and inaccurate measure of one's intelligence. I give them about as much credit as a Fox News poll.

29. There are too many variables to be an accurate measurement
All an I.Q. test will show is a measurement of a certain type of intelligence. I have met people who are considered a "musical genius', but they would be hard pressed to be able to give you directions to the bottom of the stairs.
Another observation I have had is that a large percentage of people will tell you that they have an I.Q. of 130 and over. There are more "above average" people than "average" from what I have heard.
I.Q. tests are a very unreliable source to measure the intelligence of any one person accurately. There are too many situations, social settings, ages and other variables to consider. One test will not do that.
