Goddammit! Why do I bother tuning into Law and Order anymore?

I went through a phase of L&O junkiedom when it was on A&E and still feel compelled to get an occasional fix. But in the last year or two the plot gimmicks and crazy defences have become so preposterous that the show is unwatchable.

"He's born again, ergo not legally responsible for prior actions." WTF? What kind of spaceman defence is that?

(Not to mention, how'd they get the arson case stick given the 4th Amendment-free policework that led to the confession.)

1. I wrote for the show for the first two seasons

It was great. Everything about it was great.

Then it got politically correct - bringing in more women actors, going all socially conscious, landing on Michael Moriarty for his calling out Janet Reno - and I could see that it was gonna go all preachy.

I was right.
