1. is it hard to get around if you only speak English?
Edited on Wed May-11-05 08:50 PM by amazona
Of course you may speak the local lingo very well and not know the answer to my question.

I'm thinking of taking a course in Prague.

On edit--edited because I came from a stupid site where you have to code in every bit of html and so I left in junk code, sorry.

7. don't worry, no attitude here!
I'm only scary on the internet. In person I must be very non-threatening. Even in Paris, everyone was super-kind to me. I think they think I'm a tad brain-damaged. :-) I'm just a little slower than the norm but I smile a lot.

9. Cool! I got really pissed when someone in Paris gave me attitiude.
It had never happened before in 3 trips.

This lady at the Eiffel tower *REFUSED* to let me put mayo on my hotdog. AND THE MAYO WAS RIGHT THERE!!! Ketchup only, she insisted. I tried to be polite, but she was not having it!

I guess that was the "French attitude" folks talk about so much. I'm not trippin though. Will be in Paris on Friday. :-)

11. oh that is so whack
The Eiffel Tower was broke when I got there. I watched the elevator repair men do this and that. Finally just bought a ticket for the stairs. But everyone was cool about it.

14. There is a great club
In the town center that is in a dungeon, goes till 4 or 5 in the morning.
I hope you got one of the deals off the train, stayed in an apartment for $30 dollars a night
4 years ago, people greet you at the train and drive you to their place.
stayed a week, good food, good drink, good prices, good times.

Be sure to take the subway, its the second deepest in the world built by the soviets
for bomb reasons, very cheap and a page out of history.

Prague is wonderful. I was there soon after the wall fell. I'm sure it is so different now. I was there in the 1990's just a year after the wall went down.

I walked the city with two fellow travelers. It was 4:30 am and the National holiday (the day of the founding of the Czech Republic in the early 1900s.) We walked the whole city. Freezing cold. We walked the whole city for hours. Crossed the Charles Bridge. Alone. it was our own city. Just before Halloween. It was abandoned and quiet except for us three, the train station clerk and the Babes in Toland guards at the palace where Havel (the President) resided. We walked until 9 am when we finally found a coffee shop in the Ole Town Square with the magnificent clock.

Earlier, we saw the TV trucks on the palace hill at 5 am. (I was w/ a CNN Russian bureau employee who knew the media.). Havel was to make a broadcast later in in the day - that evening.) We walked the Golden Lane where Kafka lived.

We met up w/ the Swedish folk school friends of my fellow traveler (the Hawaii state legislator historian) and watched Havel's speech on TV (in Czech) at a suburban communist era youth hotel.

Then we went to Wenceclas Square (where the Velvet revolution took place.)

It was night. The city was ancient. The crowd was young and vibrant. Revolution wa in the air. The staute of the king on horseback was impressive. The candles and flowers were laid around a monument to the heros of the previous revolution (1900s).

A huge crowd was there. There were memorials and candles lit for the patriots and the victims of the Uprising (1968). They spoke of a Velvet Divorce. (Czechs and Slovaks). I had a Bulgarian translator friend, Sophia from Sofia, Bulgaria, who told us whet the speakers were saying. There were 1000s of people. Maybe 40,000. They spoke of splitting into two republics.

It was the most brilliant time I've ever had. It was a moment in history.

It is the most beautiful city.
