27. Good description, Swede
And yes, different every time.

To my mind the basic truth revealed was that reality is only a construct. Today in the car I heard some NPR "Science Friday" talk about String Theory, and how there are probably six or seven more dimensions than the four we usually experience. All I could think was "they think there are only six or seven more -- what a sweet little joke."

43. I had some unusual reactions
First, since I normally have synesthesia, I didn't notice much about LSD. In fact, I was initially disappointed that it felt so "normal".

What it did, that I loved, was that in tremendously increased my cognitive abilities. This is usually pooh-pooh'ed, but there has been considerable scientific work to back it up. I didn't measure the increase of my IQ or other standard indicators, but within two years of starting to trip (I was doing it about once every three months), I was no longer tone-deaf, was able to learn music theory, and also was able to comprehend mathematics, and music and math had always been big challenges for me.

I was also incredibly sex-phobic when I started taking it, but during the first several episodes I lost most of my sexual fears. I was actually able to "get laid", and had several excellent relationships, whereas before the LSD, it had been impossible for me to deal with young women. (There was a big ol' honkin' three-hanky story about why I was sex-phobic in the first place, but those things just no longer mattered.)

Why did I start taking it in the first place? Well, I had had a benign cancer in my ear, and after three operatons, I was left with horrendous pain and ringing in the ears. I decided that before I was to start taking morphine or Dilaudid for it, I'd try acid, which a friend of mine in an MD/PhD neurosci program informed me was the best analgesic that had ever been discovered.

As a result, I never did go on the heavy-duty opiates. My pal is now an addiction-treatment psychiatrist in New York state.

I can't say I recommend that anyone take LSD (or any other "major entheogen", for that matter) lightly and without some initial preparation, but it has its uses, and there is a small but active scientific underground that is still researching it, and publishing, as well.

To anyone who wants to take LSD (etc.), do a little research, make sure you have a supportive environment ... and then reconsider taking it anyway. To paraphrase Crowley, your method ought to be science, your aim, religion*.

16. Many times
Most of my senior year in high school was part of an acid trip. Not the most potent or purest, but trip nonetheless. I even graduated in the top twenty of my class, and won a scholarship from the National Merit folks. I didn't take it, though, and my life went down hill shortly after that. Mostly because I started using harder drugs like alcohol, cocaine and speed.

19. Yes and also some mescaline.....
years ago when I was in college. Both produced some very interesting evenings.......

Mescaline is one of the oldest psychedelics known to man. It is the major active component of the small dumpling cactus known as Peyote. It grows wild in the Southwestern United States and in Northern Mexico, and has been used as an intimate component of a number of religious traditions amongst the native Indians of these areas. The cactus has the botanical name of Lophophora williamsii or Anhalonium lewinii and is immediately recognizable by its small round shape and the appearance of tufts of soft fuzz in place of the more conventional spines. The dried plant material has been classically used with anywhere from a few to a couple of dozen of the hard tops, called buttons, being consumed in the course of a ceremony.

Did it once on a nude beach in Northern California. I turned into sand and met God.

She screamed at me "Get off your butt, stop staring at your hands and DO something! Sheesh, hippies! They mean well, but take a Divine kick in the rear to do it..."

It worked.

And I've used sunscreen and avoided nude beaches ever since.

I was more of a punk rock dude than a hippie, but then this cute punk chick with real short black hair appeared and said, "Boy, you need to spend less time on LSD and more time building a serious revenue stream, because around the turn of the millennium, the shit's gonna hit the fan, and you'll be a 45 year old loser living with your Mom."

Like an idiot, I ignored her. And she wouldn't sleep with me, either.

and many trips. There were a number of other hallucinogens that were mellower and verryyy relaxing, though. Loved the mushroom. And some meth derivatives.

Never saw God or had any of the mystical experiences some claimed. Chemically induced "visions" aren't visions, but vacations. Can be some fun vacations, though.

Wouldn't know where to get it now. Don't even see much weed in the circles I hang in lately, but might be tempted to imbibe should the occasion arise once again.

There is that flashback thing, though...

reality can't be experimented with, or changed (edit) with status quo methodology?

i always thougth it (reality) was a living thing, fluid, changing, and malleable. Open to interpretation, and experimentation.

what's too far?

because I'm married to a person (for 12 years) who has spent the past 6 years (on and off in covert ways) escaping reality with chemicals in one way or another (which isn't a big deal because his career is going well :eyes: ). I have a glass of wine sometimes and on a rare instance I've been known to smoke a joint (well maybe three hits off one), but for me personally, this just isn't my thing. I don't care what someone else does as long as they aren't hurting others in the process.

36. Yup
I loved it. I did it about ten times, when I was in college. (mid-nineties)

I have to admit, my friends and I did the typical stuff when we tripped. Listened to Pink Floyd as well as ambient music, talked about Eastern mysticism, read "Be Here Now", watched Japanese cartoons.

I remember one time taking two hits right before I went out clubbing with some very straight-laced people from work. They had absolutely no idea. They didn't even question why I didn't want anything at Denny's after we went out. I could never look at food, it made me want to gag.

51. About fifty times
Between 1989 and 1995 or so. I truly believe that the person I am today was greatly influenced and constructed by the experiences I had taking LSD during that six-year time span. If I had never taken LSD I think I would be a lot more restrained and uptight, not to mention having a more limited perspective. It wasn't so much about the hallucinations or the high as it was about the mental insight I gained; new and different ways of visualizing reality, and my place in it. If you are a student of philosophy, consciousness or just plain existence, I believe LSD is an invaluable tool to help you analyze these themes.

It wasn't all visions and roses, though: I don't recommend anyone drop acid if they have any emotional issues or have even just had a bad day, because the little issues get magnified if you lose control of them. For instance, I once took LSD the night of a favorite co-worker's last day (she quit and moved out west), and I wasted most of the trip feeling depressed that I wouldn't get to talk or spend time with her any more. Another annoying thing was that the acid took too long to wear off; sometimes you do get tired of tripping and want to come back down to normalcy, but the only way I could ever make that happen was to go to bed, and that was awfully tough, clearing out the flowers so I could sleep.

All in all, however, I'll never regret any of it - I'm proud to have ventured out into the mental cosmos and feel that I am better for it.

58. I felt that since Socrates would, I would too
OK, I'm just kidding about Socrates. I don't know why I did it - probably just curiosity.
One time, out of sheer boredom, I drank a whole bottle of Italian wine, ate a colossal apple fritter, and dropped. I did have a religious vision, and I never speak about it, so I won't go into it. But I'll never forget it.
Actually, I think there's a good chance that Socrates would try it, if only to get away from Xanthippe for awhile.

Both my parents, my little brother, AND his wife! But me, never

When I was in third grade, my mother came to pick me up at school, and as we were walking on the grounds, my mother said to me "Don't ever do acid. I did it last night, and it was horrible."

And somehow that stuck. Isn't that weird? Also, I've never been offered it.

61. Acid sorted my head out
I used to be really uptight, angry, hardly ever smiled, until i started going tripping with some friends, and realised that the state of mind i was in was just one arbitrary choice out of a huge range, and other states of mind were possible, and just as valid. In summary: acid rocks! But it's not to be taken lightly
