Now That I've Reached 30,000 Posts, I've Decided to Take a Break From DU

I've been posting here practically every day since September 9, 2001 - the day I joined DU. But now, I need to take a break.

Why, do you ask? Because this place has changed, and I need to assess my continued participation here.

Back in October, I convinced my wife to become a DU-er, and in the ensuing months she has been the subject of some of the most vicious and obnoxious slurs imaginable. And when I came to her defense (as any good husband would do), I got branded as a trouble-maker.

And lately, I find myself getting involved in too many flamefests - many of which are about the same old subjects. In the past when DU-ers disagreed on something, they moved on and could discuss the next topic civilly, Now, we seem to have a whole slew of people who want to continually dredge up old battles, even going in to the archives to post links to old threads.

So I've decided to go into self-imposed exile, before I go too far and get myself tombstoned. I'll still log on occasionally to check my inbox, but that's it. If the Lounge continues to be the battleground it's become in recent weeks, then you'll know I'm not to blame. But if it's all calm and peaceful when I return, I'll know I'm to blame and simply won't post here again.

So this is my last post for a while. Don't forget, people - we're Democrats. We're supposed to be fighting the bad guys - not fighting among ourselves.

You changed a bit too when your wife started posting. I don't mean this as negative against you OR her but sometimes it's best to let those we care about stand on their own convictions and not have everything be perceived as a cause for war.

WE've had our agreements and disagreements...but the gun dungeon will be all the more slimy for your absence.

I have to say something about your "wife" argument:

one of the big problems here, and on boards in general (and come to think of it, with debating in general), is that people debate people, not articulate concepts that debate other concepts. It, honestly, always annoyed me that you would step in to "defend your wife"; your wife doesn't exist here. Only her posts do. Only the concepts that her brain articulated. Your wife didn't need defending. This isn't a playground of personalities, but one of arguments.

I love DU, and usually stay out of flamefests, but... I know I spend WAY too much time here.

If the experience is negative, then that time's basically wasted.

Breaks are a good thing.

On Edit: I think you made a good choice in stepping away. I hope the self imposed tombstone is a short one. I will stay away from making any comment on your wife's status on DU. It not really my place. I don't think its anyone's place for that matter, but opinions are like . . .
