Help! Male cat sprays sofa...residents cleared out until further notice
Edited on Wed May-11-05 12:08 PM by Dover
Now this IS an emergency! Does anyone know of any miracle products to get the smell of male cat out of my sofa, or should I start shopping for a new one? I'm serious....it's awful! PU! And the upholstery can't be removed for cleaning (and even if it could, what gets that smell out?).

The male cat is my neighbor's and I don't know how he got past the radar, and Secret Service.

1. Natures Miracle
Don't have a cat so I can't vouch for it's effectiveness on cat spray, but it works by breaking down the enzymes.

store?

7. It works pretty well for neutered pets, but...
I had an un-neutered cat who sprayed, and even Nature's Miracle didn't help. Just put a matress and box springs out for the garbage men to pick up because of the odor.

12. I didn't know there was a difference in the spray of a neutered vs.
un-neutered cat. This male cat HAS been neutered.

2. Simple Green has always worked for me.
If it can get the smell of chicken manure out of the carpet of an Xterra, it can work on cat urine.

10. True...Simple Green is a miracle product but not sure how it would
affect my upholstery or it's color fastness. The carpet of a car is like indoor/outdoor carpeting and is not delicate. But I may try that.
thanks.

4. Try Nature's Miracle - Just for Cats
It's worked for me. Follow the directions, but do it continuously for a couple of days.

Good luck!

enzyme spray that you can get at pet stores. I would do as thorough a cleaning of the sofa as you can and then do multiple applications of Simple Solution. I have males cats who pee/spray on items and this is the product that works the best for me.

13. Actually, instructions on Nature's Miracle
say NOT to preclean, as the chemicals in other cleaners can interfere with the enzymes doing their thing.

11. One cup hydrogen Peroxide, one tablespoon dish washing soap
and 1/2 water. Use mixture immediately because it loses it's strength. Of course, you may want to test the back of the sofa to see if it will damage your fabric.

15. You can try one of the variety of enzymatic cleaners
available at the pet stores, but you may be in trouble.
If the urine penetrated the foam/fiber of the cushions you probably won't ever get the smell out completely. If the little pain only managed to get a place covered by fabric (the side, the skirt) you have a pretty good chance.

Be LIBERAL with the enzyme stuff -- soak it if you can. Do not blot or dry; just let it dry on its own, which may take days depending on temps in your house, humidity, etc. It's the drying action that takes the smell away, though, so be patient.

Even if you get the smell out (to your nose) you may find it comes back on rainy days (not as bad). Additionally, ANY cat worth his/her whiskers will be able to smell it forever -- so be very careful about who you let sniff around.

I live in a house with four wonderful felines -- but one of them sprays everywhere. Neutered, but no matter, it's a behavioral thing. If he were mine, I'd find a nice farm for him to live on; he's not happy as an indoor, apartment cat. However, he belongs to my roomie, so I just sigh a lot.
Good luck.

18. Well.....I may be in trouble then. It is strongest on the cushion areas.
I'll try your ideas and see if I can save the couch. Thanks.

16. Cat urine needs an enzyme based product
I've used urine-off before with good success. I've also used other enzyme base products that were equally effective, including some of the ones mentioned above. My friend used a product that was made for soaking baby diapers that also worked.

Here's a website for urine-off
http://www.urine-off.com/

Be patient when you apply an enzyme based cleaning product, it takes a bit of time for the enzymes to do their job, but once they're done the problem is permanently corrected. Also, don't use any detergent based products before you apply enzymes, it can lessen their effectiveness.

Good luck!

21. Help me out, please...
I've heard, and have regularly repeated, that a male cat's spray has no odor. It's not the same thing as pee, and is designed to be smelled by cats rather than by people.

23. As someone who has been sprayed...
in the face by an unneutered male, I can say with absolute certaintly that it does smell. I even had to get rid the the Huey Lewis shirt I was wearing at the time because the smell was so bad and would not come out. :)

Our neutered sprayer's deliveries aren't as pungent, to be sure, but stale pee is stale pee, no matter how you smell it.

Cats. Gotta love 'em!

But I hope these remedies work, and that you don't have to go that far. Good luck!

But ONLY after you move the sofa outside.

I don't know of anything that removes the stench of cat squeeze completely. You think you got it gone, and then on some rainy, humid day.....<sniff?>
