NFL coach can NOT wear a suit & tie on the sidelines

NFL Becomes the Not (So) Formal League

http://story.news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050511/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_jim_litke

Which is sadder: that the NFL said "no" when rookie 49ers coach Mike Nolan offered to bring a little class to the sideline by wearing a coat and tie next season? Or that the league will say "yes" the moment its official supplier gives the high sign?

Either way, what should have been a neat little story is already well on its way to becoming a marketing rollout.

It began when Nolan petitioned the league for permission to dress the way Dick Nolan did when he coached on the same sideline in San Francisco from 1968-75. The son wasn't looking for attention or an endorsement deal, or even trying to shame his counterparts into cleaning up their act. Just a way to give props to the father whose pictures are scattered around his office.

"I think it's respectful," Nolan recently told his hometown newspaper, then added, "What I was trying to say, there's somebody in charge and this is what they look like."

"And if we don't make it," Reebok spokesman Eddie White said Tuesday, "he can't wear it."

3. Let's see you are in charge of a multi-million dollar operation
and you slouch around the sidelines in running pants?

2. He should just wear it anyway.
And if the No Fun League punishes him, the backlash will be severe.

10. I think they are given options of what to wear
The head coach picks what he and everyone else will wear THAT WEEK.

They change it up from week to week to sell more clothes.

Nike does the same with Tiger Woods-anything new that he wears (planned out a year in advance) will be on store shelves by the following Monday. Payne Stewart had a similiar deal with the NFL-he wore outfits of the closest NFL team at every tournament.

6. Boy...It's a good thing I'm not a Coach. (with my Attitude)
Edited on Wed May-11-05 10:50 AM by BlueJazz
I would wear their crap..But I wouldn't shave for a week or wash my hair (and made sure it stuck out all over the place)
Also...After I put their clothes on I'd Change the oil in my car and "Accidentally" get about a quart of used engine oil all over the front after I spilled Grape juice on the pants.

I'd look like a Wino that had just crawled out of the Sewer....

13. NFL merchandising used to gie 100% of profit to charities
Then everyone started buying $80 jerseys (now about $120) and they uh stopped mentioning how much they give to charitie$$$$$

There was a thread about attire at sporting events a long time ago. If the coaches started wearing suits again (how about just a reebok made tie?) I wonder how many fans would start wearing suits again.

12. Damn they almost look professional huh?
I just realized that Paterno still wears his black pants/white shirt/tie/black shoes/ white socks look to this day. I can't think of anyone else that comes close to wearing a suit...... many college coaches at least wear a V-neck sweater and a tie, NFL coaches look like gym teachers in comparison.

18. What's worse is that Reebok does not appear to make
men's underwear.

"And if we don't make it," Reebok spokesman Eddie White said Tuesday, "he can't wear it."

17. Maybe, it's just me, but I was just saying
last year that I was really tired of all the "suits" in football. Why? Because it reinforces the image of it being a business..

is in a spot where he's trying on a suit. Not a Reebok shoe or ugly-ass NFL apparel anywhere in sight.
