Morse Code Mosquito in the Telephone Line?
I just heard it again, coming from my neighbor's cubicle. It's a buzzing sound, something like Morse Code: dot dit dit dit dot dit dit dit dot dot dit dit dit dot.

Now I now you might think I'm crazy, but yesterday she was remarking on the very phenomenon with another neighbor, so I know I'm not imagining it. The bizarre thing is I've heard the very same "Morse Code mosquito" sound coming from my own cell phone, from our answering machine, and from the computer--probably from the modem actually, since it must be on the phone line.

My questions are two:

1: Has anyone else here heard this sound from their own or other people's phones?

2: What the hell is it?

:wtf:

1. Possibility:
You really are picking up Morse code. If you record it, maybe someone at DU can translate?

3. the ghost of morse himself
It could be just a crossed line. Whenever I used to get static on my spare dedicated fax line, it was usually because the phone company had accidentally crossed the line with a new phone line installation.

Even rain dripping on the phone cables can create static havoc. If your on a phone network at work, have one of your I.T. guys track it down.

5. The oddest thing is that this sounds *out*
i.e., you don't have to be on the phone to hear the sound. In fact, it usually sounds when the phone isn't even in use. :wtf:

4. It's a local talk-around radio frequency bleeding into the landline
and coming through on the phone speaker.

Chances are the building has say, a maintenance service that keeps in touch via 2 way radios.

6. Even when the phone is not being used?

That makes sense. It sounds like a radio.

PS: Why is it audible on her phone but not mine? Or anyone else's around here.

7. Cell phone near the computer speakers
Many new cell phones emit enough RF when checking for voicemail/text msgs, etc. that it interferes with computer speakers and causing a buzzing sound.

8. Aha!
That is the best explanation I've heard. She leaves her cell on her desk, and it's very likely that I've only heard that sound when the cell is on the desk at home.
