Mononucleosis, the class was told, is a disease that "whores" get.
Former students at Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School say that was part of a lesson given by a teacher who disclosed a student's case of mono and explained it was spread by "sexually active girls."

Now, the target of those comments — 2004 graduate Rebecca Alvarado — has filed a lawsuit against two teachers, the dean and the principal at the all-girls Chicago Catholic school, claiming her privacy was violated and her reputation damaged.

Alvarado claims English teacher Judy Neary drove rumors that Alvarado had a disease "whores" get. She also names math teacher Nancy Vandertuuk and dean Carolyn McGovern in her complaint.

Alvarado, who was hospitalized in March 2004 and missed a month of school because of mononucleosis, hepatitis, jaundice and dehydration, provided student affidavits claiming teachers drove rumors of her illness. She said she doesn't know how she got mono.

This is the kind of shit that makes my blood boil. I used to teach Catholic School (6 years) and ChicaAzul has been doing it for 14 years. I promise you that where we taught, not only was that NOT the kind of message we spread, but we would have been SERIOUSLY called on the carpet by both our Nun principals and our priest pastors. BTW, we taught both in Philadelphia and Maine.

My best Principal was a Sister of Mercy, which is the order founded by Catherine McAuley. My Mother lives in a retirement community run by that order. I can tell you that the Mercies I know would NEVER act in this way.

4. Most People, Male and Female, Have the Antibody

in their bloodstream by the time they turn 21. That mean they've been exposed and either caught mono or successfully resisted it. It's often spread by kids to other kids, parents, or caregivers.

This is incredible ignorance on the part of the teachers, not to mention cruelty. And the fact that they were the ones who publicized what disease she had is absolutely inexcusable. A lawsuit is completely appropriate.

I had a bad case of mono about five years ago, and I have never felt the same since. At about the same time, my brother's wife (an extremely conservative evangelical) had an even worse case.

I don't know weather I think, as you say, its the cruelty or the ignorance that pisses me off more, so I'll just be angry about both!
