1. Looks like a pileated woodpecker
Edited on Mon May-09-05 03:59 PM by Richardo
They're pretty big...We get them on our cedar siding every now and again (NOT THE CEDAR, GUYS!)

Sounds exactly like a jackhammer.

3. Pilated Woodpecker I think.
Wow, I would love to see one of them. We get Flickers that just hang on our house and beat away at it. We have to run outside and make a lot of noise then they come right back. Many holes in the Cedar siding. Love them but that drives me crazy.

several visit me in the summer. if memory serves, they can be as tall as 18".

gorgeous dinosaur descendants!

watched a parent perch & guard youngster while he tried out my sunflower-seed feeding station, mingled w/ the mourning doves on the ground, for app 2 hours last summer. bird feeding area is about 6' from my enclosed cat-porch; set up to entertain my indoor cats.

birdies/kitties all very happy!

10. Very cool pileated woodpecker! I didn't know they lived up north.
Edited on Mon May-09-05 04:16 PM by CottonBear
We have them here in the southeast. They can make big holes. They really like old, rotton logs and standing snags, which is all the more reason not to "clear brush and dead trees."
