Democratic Underground, home of the Comma Usage Massacre
:wtf:

One day, I was typing, and, every time that I stopped to think about, what I was going to say next, I dropped a comma in, because I don't know my head from my ass.

1. "Really?" Because I was "overcome" by "excessive" use of
"quotation" "marks". Hmm....must be something "going" around.

10. What's funny is that I actually DO use too many quotation marks.
Edited on Mon May-09-05 10:47 AM by Bunny
I still struggle with ways to show emphasis. I'm a real slow learner, but I'm better than I used to be! :)

Edited to add my next lesson: appropriate use of available smileys.

commas, those pesky pauses of punctuation, are not, in anyway, overused, here on DU, or anywhere else! Ellipses, italics, underlining, and boldface.

They help me get my point across!

What I really hate is how some people never capitalize anything. It looks passive-aggressive, somehow.

Since it will be followed by:

Accept/Except, Adapt/Adopt, Administer/Administrate, Ain't, A lot/Allot/Alot, Already/All Ready, Altogether/All Together, Always/All Ways, American Grammar vs. British Grammar, American Spelling versus British Spelling, American Spelling vs. Australian Spelling, Ante-/Anti-, Anyway/Any Way/Anyways, Apart/A part, As/Like, Assume/Presume, Awhile/A While et cetera, etc. and so on and so forth...

37. My name is Lindsay, and I'm an ellipses addict.....
That's my biggest overuse issue. The unnecessary quotes bug me, but what bugs me the most is people who just refuse to capitalize or use punctuation, at all.

im sure you know what i mean right?

Edited on Mon May-09-05 11:53 AM by ltfranklin
This foolishness has gone on long enough! I hereby end it with the traditional thread-killer!

You know, Hitler liked commas! The Nazi's used commas, ellipses and exclamation points!!! Goering was very fond of "quotation marks"!!!

There!!!! That should do it...shouldn't, it?

45. Well, like, I dunno
is it REALLY a popular thing, like to overemphasize something, huh, like, you know, when you're writing something, and like, to forget to use some kinda grammar, like, shortcut, because like you really wanna make a person see, like, what you're talking about. You know what I mean, huh?

I mean, like it's not like we don't all use certain, like, uh, cliches and rhetorical thing-a-majiggies, to like get our points across. Like, I know how to spell really well, so I don't think like there's much wrong with stuff that I write for DU--like it's not like I'm writing for like a magazine or something. You know what I mean?
